How I started making knives

LOL. I just figured she was reserving Carebears Forge for you...

Andy,

It's great to see you with your own section! I'll have to make over to ATL in the next few months. It'd be really good to see you. Here's my baby~ the only kitchen knife I had for several months.

Hey John! Great to see you. Open invite if you come my way.

I had forgotten you had that knife. I saw a few more blanks I had cut in the shop a few weekends ago. And just yesterday I was thinking of breaking out the sheppards cross again. That sheath is maybe my favorite I've ever made.

Your knives look great, Andy. Maybe one day after I climb out of debt (I expect my first "real" paycheck at the end of February), I can get you to make a similar blade shape for a hard-use camp knife, something bullet proof. You could call it the Short Stuff. :)

Andy,
I just realized this forum was here and I'm glad I found it. I don't own one of your knives yet but that's a problem I hope to fix in the near future.
I love your scale designs and pin configuration but what really sold me on your stuff is the convex grind. I love a convex edge and that's all I make as well.

I'm a fan of convex too actually. Mine is a full convex grind. Most guys do a flat grind and convex the edge. ;)

I hear ya. I said convex edge but I meant to say grind. All mine are 3/4 to full height convex grinds.
Anyway, You have a new fan here. Love your stuff.

I stumbled across this little piece of history when I was looking for something else... I found it interesting, so I figured I'd revive it for ya'll! Boy how time flies, eh?

This is funny. I wasn't even full time yet. This was at the inception of this forum.

Update.

On May 1, 2009 I went full time at knifemaking due to a layoff. Thanks to all of y'all, it has worked quite well so far. Thanks!

The original post was made before the machetes got into my head. I have started doing a few more tactical knives, but I still enjoy using and carrying the bushcrafting stuff more.

Great thread to dig up. Thanks!

Wow, terrific old thread someone dug up! I've often, since joining BF wanted to start making some of my own knives. So Andy, your story is inspiring!

Funny how Layoffs can seem like the worst thing ever, but often lead to better things. I was laid off the week before Christmas in 2008 and having two kids it seemed like the end of the world at that moment in time. But if it hadn't happened I would have probably never started my writing career which has been great.

As I sit here alternately typing and fondling my favorite woods knife, I'm really glad you got laid off and got pushed into taking the leap Andy.
