How important is a folder that can be deployed quickly?

Its nice for one to open fast, but reliably and smoothly is much more important to me...I dont rely on a knife for self defense, thats what one of my many guns are for..Ive saw a inmate beat another shank wielding inmate near to death with a mop ringer...

Damn! Anyone know where I can get a sheath for a mop wringer?;)

Its started over a UK/Louisville game..Bad winner and sore looser,LOL Dont get me wrong, Id rely on a knife if I had to, no doubt. Just not my first choice is all :p

I went to a local hardware store recently. I needed to buy something, forget what, but needed to see the item, which was boxed up. I'm standing there in the aisle with the salesperson, and older guy.

I asked him if it was OK to open the box to look at the contents. He says "Sure! Just let me......" and starts patting himself down for his pocket knife.

As soon as he said "Sure!" I was reaching for my Laconico custom.

Now, this is a pretty big folder, 4" blade, and it opens with some authority. It appeared, opened, sliced, and disappeared while he was still looking for his knife. For a moment or two, the fella stood there with his hands in his pockets looking at me with his mouth open, then he just kinda wandered off.

I like a knife that opens "quickly" and securely all the time. I pick my knives on ease of use while my off hand is busy doing whatever BUT, I do keep a knife as a secondary SD item. I don't always ccw so if I run into trouble I'm peacing out.. If it resorts to a knife for SD I can comfortably say I have "practiced" handling all my blades that I know when and how they'll consistently come out if that situation arises.

While I'm certain you enjoyed showing off in that fashion, I doubt that either opening the package quickly or startling the clerk who was at least attempting to be helpful qualifies as important. But on behalf of the knife community in general, I want to thank you for representing us in such a thoughtful and responsible manner.

I don't waste time in stores. If I need something, then I want to get it and get on with whatever I'm doing. There was no showing off. I was in the store to get "X", and I needed to know if "X" was in that box. I had a knife, I use my knife all the time, so getting it out, using it, and putting it away again is like breathing for me, I don't even think about it. I know where my knife is, I don't have to look for it. I had the box in my hand, and I was ready to open it.

Why should I stand around and wait for someone else to do for me what I can do for myself?

I don't carry knives, or use them, for any purpose than for myself, to get work done.

I make no apologies.

Andy

For me, the general look and handholding of a knife is much more important than it being quick to open.
But then, I have zero interest in weapon use.

...I've carried one or more knives every day since 1964 without once needing to use one as a weapon.

I've never fully understood this kind of argument. I mean for instance, I've never been in a car wreck bad enough that my seat belt was needed, but that dosen't stop me from wearing one, or from making my children wear theirs.

I kind of see it as a better to have and not need, than the opposite

I suppose none of you fellas keep any firearms in your house for defensive purposes either? Since I'm guessing most of you have likely never needed to shoot anyone either right?

As far as speed of my knife, I figure more speed dosen't hurt anything, but it's not quite my main concern. I do require my EDC knives to have easy access via pocket clip, and have the ability to be easily opened/closed with one hand.

its a little different, the law requires that you and your children wear seat belts, they dont require you to have a fast access blade to defend yourself so....

actually its just the opposite, while I am all for self-defense, but why aggravate the situation with so many anti-knife sentiment going on at this time. At least (for now) few people seem worried about a small traditional pocket knife or a sak, but people whipping out a 4 inch blade in a store to open a box doesnt endear knife carrying people to the general (non-knife carrying) public.

In addition to those that say they dont cary what the sheeple think of their chosen edc, if the law changes again then i pretty sure you will care what people think then.

But to get back on topic, I keep bouncing back and forth on this issue myself, i swap regularly between a traditional pocket knife (case sodbuster jr or buck 301) to a more modern kabar dozier folding hunter, and i think i like the one handed opening, but want to find one in a more traditional (and less threatening) format. Thinking of picking up a copperliner or trapperlock or something to that effect.

Hey, this is TX! This is RURAL TX!! If you can't handle a four inch blade in TX, you need to move to a smaller state!

lol Andy,
sorry to have used you as an example...

personally i dont see a problem with what you did
i just can imagine the reactions of those that saw it and i just hope it didnt negatively affect how they think about knife users.

ps i was stationed in san antonio for 6 months and all i can say is....ya'll texans can keep it :)

It didn't effect anybody negatively. I think the gentleman was just surprised that somebody could access, use, and put away a knife so rapidly, not necessarily bothered by the size at all. In fact I don't think he really got much of a look at the knife.

I like the speed of deployment in axis locks, spydeholes, flippers and a/o's :D

The most important deployment feature is how easily it opens. Auto's and assisted opening knives are great but not necessarily needed.

True, but I would still have my kids wear it regardless of the law. My point was basically that the belt is already right there, it doesn't hurt anything to have and use it, so why not put it on just in case? I guess this kind of thinking transfers over to knives for me. I figure hey if I'm already gonna carry a knife every day anyway, might as well carry one that has features that make it easy to carry, open, close, and being more capable as a defense weapon dosen't hurt anything either. At least to my thinking. Sure I may never need use it in that mannor, but then you never know.

....And keeping myself and my family alive is pretty high on my priority list. :)

Sorry, but it sounds to me like in your mind you've already lost. You're so worried about what others might think that you already limit yourself without any need of a law to do it for you. I personally feel that a responsible person can carry more than just a basic slipjoint and use it in a mannor that will not be offensive to the majority of people. Yes some people are stupid and overly sensitive, so that may mean simply not "whipping it out, and waving it around" in front of those people.

I don't mean to sound judgemental towards those who choose not to worry about self defense. I do realize that depending on who you are and what kind of life you live, the chances of you or your family ever being assulted may be pretty dang slim. So you choose to play the odds of nothing bad happening, and hope for the best. I get that, and that's your choice.

Here's to hoping that none of us ever need to defend our selves in the first place. :)

Well said and well done IMHO, Andy. I do the same thing as much as I can and I live in California. If we use our knives as cutting tools for everyday utility tasks as much as possible in front of people, eventually they'll learn that knives are not scary. Knives are tools and just because someone carries a knife doesn't mean they're going to use it for violence. We carry knives because we cut things. We won't get anymore comments like "why do you need to carry a knife?".

Although I own or have owned some of the finest one handers out there (Carson auto and manuals, Ralphs, Cook, MT's of various models, Spyderco's, Kershaws etc) I carry slipjoints. They just cut better. In addition what other knife allows for 8 or 9 inches of edge in a 3 and 1/2 inch to 4 1/4 inch package.

Typically I chose one of the knives from this tray each morning and they all do what I need to get done with a knife as fast as I need to do it. ;)

Fast open = better balance!
Balance is so so so important in folding knives, ppl dont consider balance as an issue, but if a folder is not balanced it will slow it down and there for you wont be able to enjoy the quality that your knife has to offer!
If you want to see a perfect balanced knife, check the 940 osborne!...yeh I know I always talks about that knife, but theres a reason for that, it is probably the best folder out there, in my opinion.
