How important is local knife regulations to what you EDC?

If your local jurisdiction states there are limitations on what you can carry, do you go out of your way to abide by those laws? Even something as simple as a Manix2 exceeds limitations in many places cause of the size of the blade but it is not an intimidating blade by many standards. If you carry it with zero intention of ever being frisked or using it for "self defense" or the like, would you still carry it?

Interested in fellow knife guy opinions. Thanks.

My personal philosophy is: If I have to use a blade for self defense, I'm not too concerned about whether it's 1/2" over the carry limit. I would hope that any criminal dumb enough to make me hurt him with a knife would quickly become smart enough to get away from me and get to a hospital, and make up an excuse as to why he's bleeding like a stuck pig, for example, He broke a glass plate out of the microwave, or something. Chances are I'll be cutting for the hands and not stabbing for the torso, hopefully. All this being the case, I would predict little or no police involvement, and in the rare instance I WOULD "pop up" on a security camera I would also hope that footage would bear out that I was the " accosted party".

I don't take this into consideration at all. Right now, I'm at a bar with a Brovo 1 on my hip. At least where I live, no one cares what you have clipped in your pocket or strapped on your hip. I'll continue to carry larger knives than what my state allows (3.5") as I like big knives anyway.

Think greater harm, and remember wording.

"When a law is broken to prevent a greater harm from occurring the lesser offence should be dismissed." This is titled as many different things ,however, stands true in most places when used correctly.

I carry a blade for several reasons,

1. Utility
2. Necessity
3. Defense

I also carry additional tools for the same reasons.

The trick is to verbalize it appropriately should you need to use a tool in defense.

I shot/used the knife to (stop the threat)
I wish to file a complaint against the aggressor
I will sign the complaint
I wish to speak with my counsel.

Legally, understand I am not an attorney and am only presenting this information as a form of knowledge for those who desire to expand their knowledge base.

I would personally suggest following three simple steps in leading ones life.

1. Always be aware of your surroundings (yellow)
2. Avoid confrontation at all times (avoid places where trouble is more likely to occur, bars etc.,- when I was younger I fought a lot, and than I grew up, I haven't even attended a bar in a decade.)
3. If confrontation is unavoidable, take steps that any other individual would in your shoes. (Again all about how you argue it.)

Friend of mine EDCs a benchmade LFK. Got pulled over, the cop made a crocodile dundee 'thats not a knife' reference, and handed it back to him. I guess we have laws, just rarely enforced.

I am very careful, especially when traveling. I will check the laws in the area where I am traveling and follow them. I don't need to give anyone an excuse to hassle me!
Fortunately I live in Texas and tend to travel in areas that have very loose laws.

Knife laws always play a part in what I EDC. Better to carry a legal knife than to have your knife confiscated because it's beyond the legal limits.

Cops and bad guys alike will be more concerned with my CCW Permit...

Like I said, additional tools always make work potentially less dangerous. :)

Train well fellow traveler, train well :)

Arizona = EDC just about anything.
Arizona is definitely nice for self defense. Amazingly, our violent crime rate is mere percentages of other states too...hmmm I wonder? :)

Well, here in Texas I can have a blade up to 5.5 inches, whether its folding or fixed, I can also carry legitimate switchblades. Yup... knife laws never struck a second thought in my head, but if I were to move to a place, let's say, where I can only carry a blade under 2.5 inches and non-locking, I would still carry my 3-4 inch locking folders, but I would not go along the lines of EDC'ing something way beyond the legal limits, no overkill, I don't plan on doing anything stupid with them, and unless i'm carrying them into a federal building or something, the worst that can happen is I get it confiscated, but if it's used in a defensive situation, I have no clue.
In summary, no I do not always abide by the knife laws but I do use my knives in a responsible fashion

No, local restrictions do not influence my carry. They might if I lived in a more restricted and enforced area, but I carry a buck 110 on my hip regularly and have never even been questioned.
Maybe if I lived in NYC or the UK.
Back when I lived in SC, I called my local PD and asked about the knife laws, they didn't really know what thy were but said that if I wasn't causing trouble or committing a crime than I should be ok.

Yes they influence what I carry. I don't want to get locked up. I don't carry anything bigger than a PM2 and if I go into the city it's a Case Peanut only.
If I go upstate camping it's a BK16, but only for camping or long treks off road.

Not at all to me since all of my knives are legal to carry here.

I don't have any dirks, daggers, or other knives our state classifies as a weapon made for offence or defence.

I really don't take it into too much consideration, I carry what I want but than again I don't give an office a reason to check me out and I'm one hippie lookin' long haired bearded biker dude. ;)

This is one of the reasons I carry multiple knives, this way I can pull out the appropriate non offending knife for the job at hand.

Come to think of it, Im not familiar with the knife laws where I live. In all honesty, if you act appropriately there should be no issues.

I don't usually give it any thought. I carry whatever is feeling good that day. I have been stopped twice while carrying larger than my state limitations but they didn't care as I let them know right away I had a knife and my gun on me. As long as you're not out doing something stupid and you're courteous if you do get stopped most of the leo's around here don't mind too much.
