How is benchmade's quality control?

I just received my first benchmade via UPS today. I heard many good things about the axis lock and decided to buy my first benchmade. I got an Osbourne 940 but the blade tip is not centered. The tip is touching the handle when closed. Is this typical of benchmade quality control? I am very dissapointed. I own spydercos, CRK,WH, and microtech. Have no issues with them. How could benchmade let such a flaw out of the factory. Please let me know what you think of benchmade's quality control.

From my previous experiance with BenchMade their quality control has been very good. Like you I own Spyderco CRK and SOG. In fact I carry a benchmade auto and several other benchmade knives from the cheap line to the expensive (auto) and I have never seen any issue with QC from benchmade. Matter of fact after reading this thread I went to look at all of my benchmade knives to make sure. I would return the knife, where you bought it from, if not I would definately contact benchmade to see about a replacement. That is just my .02 cents worth.

I own a few and have handled many.

Overall, I've found their QC pretty good.

The off center tip shows up a bit, but the grinds appear even otherwise (the flats are equal, etc.). I think it's the final hand edge sharpening variance showing up.

The tip touching the handle is probably related. Blade a bit long.

Contact their warranty department and send it in. They'll make it right.

Is the pivot loose?

I have never seen an AXIS equipped Benchmade with blade touching one side of the handle.

Benchmade has outstanding QC and CS, so you'll have no problem getting it taken care of. I don't know where you got it from, but they'll make it right.

I agree with the others, I've never had a bad Benchmade knife.

Still, I'm sure that an occassional bad one gets through the QC process.
Send it back to them and I'm sure that they will make it right.

I am wondering too,if dealers dont inspect before shipping either.

Still curious, whom you bought it from.

I never had any problems with the AXIS locks, but I got a mini-skirmish that had problems with the blade being off center (it would brush the handle when closing). The blade edge would also come in contact with one of the hour glass spacers and the edge would chip. I sent it back to the dealer and got a replacement which was better, but the edge still contacts the spacer and chips, but it's minor chipping. I may send this one back to Benchmade one of these days.

I tried tightening the pivot, but it did not make a difference.
I bought the knife from newgraham. I like newgraham and have bought many knives from them. I am glad to hear that most benchmade owners do not have this problem.

I've never had a bad Benchmade and I have more than my share. FWIW my last BM was a 940 S30V purchased from NewGraham and that blade is dead center. I'd contact NewGraham and see how they want to deal with it. Going direct to Benchmade is not a problem though, I've found their customer service to be very good.

Send it back to Angieland (Warranty dept.) and they will make it right. They have a very good customer service/warranty dept.

I've had good luck with BM. I only had a problem back in the day with a Benchmade 905 that needed a liner lock adjustment and they did it quickly and sent it back to me perfect.

I've never had a BM with a blade off center or one (other than the 905) with anything wrong with it.

Dealers can be expected to inspect all their inventory. I'd either send it back to the place you bought it for a different one or send it in to BM to let them fix or replace the issues you mentioned.

Normally BenchMade has a very high quality control and it shows. As with anything though everynow and then a couple of Monday morning hangover pieces get out and cause one to question. I had a Jeep once that was a Monday morning built one. :barf: They say the best ones are Wed vehicles. Like there is anyway for us to really know.

Bottom line is you got one that isn't exemplary. I'd ask for a different one in your shoes. They'll comply.

I would send this back to point of purchase.

I would hope shipping to be taken care of as well by NG.

This is why i asked, a reputable dealer shouldnt have, but it does happen to let this slip by now an then.

Let us know what goes down from here.
