How is everyone faring with the East Coast snow storm?

While visiting East PA to see my girlfriend's family, the power went out. Their wood stove had pipe issues and was not safe to use, so I did a "five-minute firepit" outside using concrete, bricks, and dry slate that was laying around. Cooked steak and potatoes, and melted snow to use for washwater and to flush toilets. The slate also worked to convert the firepit into an oven to bake the potatoes to perfection.

Bringing the slate in as windbreak and to reflect heat:

Leaving the corners open to draw in oxygen for the fire:

Melting snow ( I moved the fuel under the pot as it burned hotter and got smaller):

One day of snow, followed by sunshine. The instant blizzard took down a lot of trees (but not right around here) so power is still out for a couple more days in some areas.

People like you just like disasters so you can show off! :D

Steak over the fire, potatoes below! It was cooked to perfection.

Moving slate over the top of the potatoes to make an oven for even baking:

I loves me a good power outage. :)

We're hit in CT. My town is 97% with no lights. Kids and wife are off to my folks in MA, just got word my son's school is canceled for the rest of the week.

I've never seen so many trees downed/topped. Went to the trails close to my house and almost got lost a couple times- couldn't recognize the trail every 20 yards or so...widowmakers everywhere- the woods will be off limits to the kids for who knows how long.

A little chilly these last couple nights! Bought beer and double stuffed oreos last night..nice.

Great stuff  those steaks look delicious :D

Glad you're hanging in there, rpn. The heavy wet snow, combined with leaves still on the trees, makes for many more trees and branches down for sure.

Shortly after the snow began getting really deep, we got the landscaper's snowplow in our parking lot. Did a nice job of clearing it. I was standing outside admiring the view when a huge CRACK spun me around: big tree limb broke, hanging down. About 15 minutes later, another crackling and swooshing sound: a smaller limb, from high up, broke off and fell onto the roadbed. Funny thing, the tree surgeons had just worked on that tree a week ago, trimming old rotten branches off.

Wow! Stay safe, Esav!

I bet you scored a lot of points with the in-laws taking care of fire, food and water like that :D

Good job

Sunny and 75 on the west coast right now. I'm fairing just fine with the east coast snow storm. Maybe you didn't really want to know how everyone is though.

That is true, impreza. I only care about those directly affected by the storm.
