How is everyone faring with the East Coast snow storm?

Luckily, I currently have heat and lights,

...but a half million of my Connecticut neighbors are still without.

Anybody heard from Tony or Marcelo? Lots of power problems in their area!

Some snow on the ground here in Litchfield county, but it's receding fast.

Hiking is very strange; between the snow, the fallen trees and branches, and now the leaves falling on the snow, any sense of trails or paths is completely gone; even familiar woods seem very foreign to me now.

I live up in New Hampshire, and we got around 24" of snow. Farther north, folks reported 32" This is a state record for us, as the earliest and most snow ever.

Due to it being so early, all of the trees had leaves, meaning more snapped branches and downed trees than I've ever seen. Power was out for roughly 4 days, but it wasn't bad. Further north is predicted to go into next week before power returns. Had a generator we would run a couple hours each day to shower up and re-cool the fridge/freezer. Spent most of the 4 days chainsawing, which I love. Been limbing and bucking since, and it looks like we'll have more than a chord of good, free, hardwood after it seasons.

Up early this morning, not much light coming in through the curtains, I thought it must be raining ... no, just the thickest fog I've seen in a long time!

Hardly enough snow left in the corners to remember the blizzard around here.

Hope you guys over there are okay! Keep us posted.

According to all the weather reports, there is a nasty wet storm coming our way that should be here Friday. Aside from tarping the wood piles and doing some cleanup in the car port, I think that my mom's place is ready.

I spoke to Tony on Tuesday, he's fine ... he's without power but still able to make his coffee :D

of course he is! He's TONY F-ing outdoorsman...and we all know Marcelo is the one making it for him.
Spoiled rotten that one is.

Hey Brian
I only lost power for a day ...lucky really.
I live in Condo's..so I didn't have to shovel, but for the cars.
My parents are still without power 2 towns over, seems there is a lot of that going around though.
These annual power outages are just like a vacation for me...sometimes I wish it would just stay off....
Then I miss Scooby Doo and the kids start fighting...and I beg the TV to magically turn on.

Great photos and story Brian

Looks like you made a terrible situation into something much more tolerable

We fared OK. The power went out Sunday morning. Spent Sunday with the old Wally-world Poulan wild thing, which incidentally doesn't fare all that bad compared with my two neighbors' Stihls. May hands made light work of the tree-trunk sized branches that littered our three yards. Thankfully and miraculously no houses were damaged. I felt so manly I would have stayed but it is that evil time of the month around here which means that SWMBO, compounded by the fact that her coping skills become non-existent, was NOT going without water (well pump here). We packed up and went to my parents' apartment in White Plains, NY. Me, wife, girl, girl, boy, dog.

Mom is in Chile right now so dad is alone and just had a year that aged him about ten. We showed up and he was sitting in bed shivering and totally confused with a temp of 103.5. We're both nurses so we didn't take him to the ER (which I'm sure would have been a mess.) We took care of him, and our kids, one of which also came down with a fever. By Tuesday after two Dr. appts., some ABX for dad and boy, dad was back to normal so we loaded our stuff and headed north to mother-in-law's place.

She just got power and needed some tree parts removal. We stopped at our house first which was 46 degrees inside. The Fish! Eight year old girl tears! Packed up the 9 fish-in-torpor, in the "travel tank" and headed west to M-I-L's place. So, me, wife, girl, girl, boy, dog and 9 um....8 fish spent a night there. By we found out our power was back on (gotta love the Facebook) so once again we packed up the camels and headed home.

I have to say that in situations like these, attitude is very important. It's make a bearable situation quite unbearable right quick. As I said all-in-all we did okay.

ETA: Oh yeah, I did manage a trade with William M. throughout all this.

Been living at my girlfriends all week because my power still out, 5 days now. Power at the shop was restored Wednesday so at least I can work. Inconvenient but everyone safe. (Springfield MA)

Normally I don't bitch about weather, but that storm sucked. With an 8 week old child in a home that is 100% powered by electricity it was a no brainer to get the family out of there. So after 1 very cold night I had the wife stay with my mother in NY, and, then to my sister's, and then finally we bugged out to the Catskills house. Just got back this morning and thankfully power came on about 25 minutes prior to us returning.

Anyway, it was interesting. We had as much as 97% with out power in my Town, and now it's down to 24%. So hopefully the rest of the people get their power back shortly.

Here's some pics from the storm. Leaves are just not meant to be on trees with this much snow...

Yeesh...good thing you went to your dads! Lot of older folks are in tough spots...I'm at UConn Health Center and we have lots of elderly coming in and getting placements in rehabs/nursing homes just to get through this mess. I'm hoping for power for today or tomorrow..it's moving it's way slowly up the street.

My family has been away since Sunday...I miss them, but wouldn't want my 1 year old in my cold house! On the plus side, beer at room tempature is pretty good at the moment! ;) :)

Still without power here.Did learn a few things from Irene. Generator and transfer switch make life a lot easier in these times.Plenty of firewood for the stove. I work for a local Public Health District so my job is taking up huge amounts of my time/overtime with this emergency. Luckily my gennie runs 16-17 hrs on a tankful. Mad/crazy crowds at the gas stations that do have power. Hoping for power tomorrow or Sun. Rural living can have its drawbacks at times. Seems like the major roads/corridors get power first. Makes sense.--KV

I wish i understood forestry- the damage is insane. I was walking last night and it seems every 3rd-4th tree is damaged, capped. Don't know how they will recuperate!

We got off lightly this time. The power was only out for three days (as opposed to six with Irene). The generator we got prior to Irene made it like cheating.

I hope everyone else gets back on line soon.
