I've been debating getting the BK9 (it would be my first Becker) for a long time. What keeps stopping me is that it seems that alot of people hate the sheath. How bad is it really, and what makes it so unlikeable?

I don't have a 9, but I think if there is anything that SHOULDN'T hold you back, it's the sheath. There are so many aftermarket options out there from kydex to leather, and I think specops makes one that fits as well. I rarely end up using the factory sheath on any of my fixed blades. And with an after market sheath you can set it up how you want it, to fit your needs. If you like the knife just get it, and if you end up wanting to get rid of it you won't have a hard time(although I don't think you will want to get rid of it)

I just saw your name, and pic. I have been watching nothing but topgear on netflix for 3 weeks. Literaly, started at season 1, and as of last night I'm on season 12 ep 7. I also have a stig sticker on my car :D

It comes with a typical cheaper sheath like just about any knife I can think of.

When you want a sheath for a knife you go have one made that suits your carry style and needs.

Eh, they work for the intended purpose of what a sheath is supposed to do.

Keep the knife with you.
Protect you from the blade.

In that regards, they work.

Are they the toughest out there? No.
Are they the best out there? No.
Are they the most stylish? No.

But they do come with a pouch, and will work.

Factor in, you can in the upwards of $400 for a knife from a custom maker, and it doesn't come with a sheath at all. So........

The idea behind BKT is to bring you the best, highest quality tool for the money you are spending. What doesn that mean? It means, Basic. Basic colors (black) basic sheath (function), basic price (lower than comparable blades).

You want more, get ready to pay more. If you're gonna pay more for the extras from the factory, you will be paying the same extras on the secondary market to get what you want.

I wish they could have kickass sheaths, colored blades, micarta handles, but by the time you do that, a BK2 is gonna cost you $130, as opposed to the $65 it costs now.

You gotta pay to play, but I promise, a BKT knife and sheath, will work just fine, right out of the box.

Actually, I was thinking about starting a support-group thread for the stock KA-BAR/Becker nylon sheaths.... cause I kinda like 'em. Got one on my 7, got one on my 9, gonna have one with my Machax someday. It's a little tricky getting the Remora out when the big knife is seated.

The sheath on the BK9 is extremely basic. It's just a nylon job with a plastic insert, a pouch on the outside, and snap retention that only goes on your belt. But as others have said, it still works. I personally bought a Chestnut Ridge Knife Shop kydex sheath for mine since the rattling in the sheath was annoying me. That set me back about $40, but combining that with the BK9 itself and a Mora piggybacked on the sheath with paracord comes out to about $130 total. Pretty good deal for what you're getting in my opinion.

As everyone has said, the sheaths are not the best but but it has worked for all my needs thus far. Nice aftermarket kydex won't break the bank if you find yourself entirely dissatisfied though. You'll get one hell of a knife for the price and thats all i'm concerned about.

Given what the BK9 knives cost compared to any other US made knife of their size, getting ANY sheath with the knife is a bargain.;)

Having said that, the factory sheath works just fine.

I agree. Maybe its because I haven't had my hands on "good" sheaths yet, but I really have no complaints about my 9's sheath. I've been thinking of ways to mod it, but haven't had the time to do anything to it. But like Moose said, it does what it is supposed to do, and keeps the blades at a nice price point.

I don't feel like the sheath should in any way keep you from buying the blade if thats what you're asking.

I like my kydex one better, but the stock sheath is absolutely functional. Seems silly to pass on an outstanding knife just because it has an average sheath.

+1. I haven't used it extensively, tbh, but works out just fine.

It's a stock sheath and is a larger version of the BK7 stock sheath. Definitely better than the BK10 stock but stock nonetheless. It excels at what Moose said, it let's you carry it with you, without slicing flesh.

what almost everyone said, except that guy... :D

the problem is that we have sheath snobs :) they like what they like, and everyone is different. just like their choices on just about everything, except the knives.

Buy Becker!

I think they are a little bulky but like Mossey said, they work. I took the plastic liner out of mine and heated it up with a heat gun then clamped flat in the middle while it cooled, makes a really snugg fit!

My BK9 sheath is.... fine. As others have said. I mostly pack-carry my 9 so it's not a huge issue for me.

My BK2 sheath on the other hand.... LOL. That one did require some customization, until I get around to/can afford to upgrade.

For a knife in the price range of the Beckers, I wouldn't be as worried about a top quality sheath. If they cost $150, sure, I'd want a better sheath. For the price they are at? They are fine. You can always upgrade if you want a fancy sheath, anyway.

I don't mind the BK9 sheath. I won't be wearing it on my belt but packing it in/out.

Spec-Ops does not have a sheath that fits the BK9 that I could find. Their "long" sheath only fits up to an 8" blade.

I too was worried about the sheath before I bought mine. However I was accustomed to buying Scrapyard knives for roughly twice the price that had no sheath. I found the sheath to be better than some of the cordura ones I had paid $20 for for my Scrapyard knives. It will work fine until/if you decide you want to spend $ on a kydex or leather one. Buy the 9, if you like big, lightweight knives I don't think you will regret it.

I rate the Becker sheaths as adequate...not ideal or exceptional. They are functional as-is, but I just toss them in a box in the garage and go aftermarket when I get a new BK.
