I just ordered the Native because it looked good. It doesn´t get much publicity here though and is seldom mentioned as an EDC.
What do you think?

I carried one fora year and it was a great knife. A little too small for my taste. The Native is the gateway drug of Spyderco. Once you get one your addicted to the companies products and cant stop buying them.

Actually there are quite a few people who carry the Spyderco Native. Do a search here on this forum and over at the Spyderco Forum. The Native is an excellent knife for EDC. It is of sufficient size, i.e., not too small nor too large. It has good ergonomics, quality blade steels and (in my opinion) a great blade grind. All of this tied together makes for a very attractive knife and at the price, very hard to beat. The Native was my introduction to Spyderco Knives and that was over a year ago. I like the Native so much that I am now collecting them. I'm pretty sure you won't be dissappointed when you get yours. It is an excellent knife and probably won't be your last Spyderco.

A sample of some of the Native variations.

I have one, I think it is a love it or hate it kind of think with these. I have more than a dozen different Spyderco folders, the Native is the least of my favorites. It sits in the drawer, unused. Three strikes against it in my book, The opening hole is somewhat obstructed by the handle.
I can only find one comfortable grip position.

Not crazy about false edges or the appearance of such
It's a great knife for the price, quality throughout, made in USA. I would recommend it to a friend with the above caveats. Now if I could only figure out why I bought it:D

I hate the way the Native feels in my grip.:thumbdn:

But I LOVE the way the Native III feels.

The Native II and III are in my EDC rotation and I can safely say that the Native is one of my top 5 favourite knives. For me, the grip is terrific and the blade design very useful. I love everything about it.

I have decided to switch over to larger folders, but my Native III was one of my favorites. The Native's blade, coupled with the handles of the Native III, would be great. I would love to see the Native as a fixed blade in its current size, or the Native Chief model, a larger prototype version of the Native.

The Native I is one of my top three Spydercos. It is a consistent EDC of mine. It is absolutely one of the best knives for the money. As an added advantage, it can also be found in "Golden Colorado USA Earth" iterations, which for me is a big plus.

It is small enough to be carried comfortably and the FRN doesn't shred pockets like many of my G10 knives do. I also find it very comfortable to hold, though I don't have a III model to compare it to. I think I'd prefer the thinness of mine anyway.

Everyone should have either a Delica or a Native, and given that I don't like the new Delica 4s much, I heavily favor the Native. It's just a plainly good knife.

The Native is a nice little pocket knife. Not a whole lot of people carry it every day, except possibly as a second knife, because it doesn't fill what many people feel is a crucial reason for carrying a knife—for self defense. That's not to say it doesn't have its nitche. There are many people who carry either backup knives or who don't feel the need to carry a blade as a weapon. Obviously, a slipjoint knife isn't going to offer much protection, either, and there are many people who carry those. In my opinion, the Native is vastly, vastly superior to having a slipjoint. It's got very decent steel, a point that is mostly lost if one gets a serrated model, plus it can be sharpened to razor sharpness without quickly losing its edge (not the kind to carry a "working" edge).

I personally don't need a razor sharp knife, and three inches or less is too small for what I like to carry. Four inches are ideal and five inches, or even six, when the situation might call for it. Sadly, Spyderco isn't generous with its steel and S30V might not be the best blade material for self defense. Still, if I could find a 4-inch lockback clip- or spear-point for a reasonable price, I'd undoubtedly go for it.

So really, I think it's the size that makes it a poor EDC.

I have the Native in black with full serrations. Haven't used it yet but it feels great in the hand especially with that extra finger choil integrated into the blade. I think the Native definetly carries some of the nastiest looking serrations on the market and that is partly what sold me on it. Pkdmslf impressive collection there by the way.

I have a plain-edge Native that I got a couple of years ago. It makes a fine edc and a great quality knife for its price. I find it quite comfortable to hold when using the choil. My Native spends most of its time in the console of our car, since I prefer to edc a multitool most of the time.

That seems to be a fairly large generalization without any evidence to back it.

To the original poster, I recently bought a friend a VG-10 Native III and he EDCs it and uses it for anything he can think of. Its a good choice for a reliable folder.

I have the Native in the s30v. I really like the knife. I am just so used to sticking the Kerdhaw Blackout in my pocket that I often forget about the rest.

I have been using a Native III for EDC for a couple of months now. Was using the enduras before. Thought I would give this one a try. It sees hard use on my job. I think it is a great knife.

I'm not sure how you got the idea it is seldom mentioned.
It's mentioned in every thread that asks about a $50 or less folder, usually by three or four people as being a great deal and a great EDC.

It was my first EDC. For my smaller hands at 5'6" it's a PERFECT fit! It feels totally comfortable and I love it. It is a great working knife for everyday chores and general cutting I think. I often carry it at work, in the Hospital ER where I practice at, when carrying my Militray is not practical. It's a great knife for the price and one that doesn't draw too much attention when you whip it out.

I'd love to get the native if only because I hear so many people on these boards say that they love to carry it every day.

I've put a knife in my pocket every day for the last 12 years and I don't think I've ever even had the thought of having to use if for self defense. I know some of you may call me unprepared, but yeah, I've never thought of myself as having to get into a knife fight. I guess in small town America, fists do the job. And usually beer follows right along (and before!).

At $40 at Wally World, I consider it a must have in this price range and size. Other must haves are Kershaw Leek and Benchmade mini Grip (My next purchase). Of the three, I think it is the best deal, at $40.

I have one. If it fits your hand, it's a keeper. Light. Tough. Good steel. Well constructed. It will do most any job a knife should.
