How is the Spyderco Native?

IMO the grip is perfect for what I think the primary purpose of this knife is and that is self defense.
Against what?

No, seriously, S30V blades are great for edge retention, but are apt to not do well in self defense applications. Hard steels tend to be a bit brittle and subject to breakage. If Cold Steel would take S30V and sandwich it between slabs of 420, its San Mai steel would actually be more worth what they ask for it and it would be suitable for self defense. But even then it would have to be four inches or better.

I think for the money ($40), I might even get one; however, I'd really, really like mine to be black. I wonder if Wally World has any of them? (I don't have one anywhere near me, but I'll be goin' north on vacation tomorrow and I'll probably pass by one on my travels.)

Consider the grind on the native. It's a fairly low hollow grind. For my purposes, that's not a good grind but it might be fine for you.

Against whatever might be grabbin' your ankle.

I may be wrong but when I look at the blade shape I see one meant for both penetration and slicing.
I'm not talking about fighting hordes of Uruk'hai here. :D

The Native is a great knife for the money. As mentioned, it's the gateway knife for Spyderco's in general. Once you scored a Native, you usually end up buying a few of the others to try out. I found myself visiting the Spyderco booth at the Blade Show in June just because I bought a Native and liked it. Handled a lot of their knives there.

Not every Walmart carries the Native. You may have to try several stores to find one.
