How long do you give to confirm a knife sale/trade?

I have extremely bad luck with topics I start in the Community Forum getting moved to different places, but I thought this seemed like the logical place to ask the question how long you give someone to confirm a knife trade/sale after they first email you? I've had a few instances where someone says "I'll take it" then I email them back with the particulars (like how to pay me) and it can be a while, sometimes days, before they respond again. Usually there was an email problem, the person only checks it every now and then, that type of thing. What do you think is a fair amount of time to wait before you offer the item back up for sale or trade assuming the person who said they want it doesn't get back to you promptly?

Moving to TGB&U ...

I know it can be confusing; we have a lot of different forums here.... Anything to do with buying, trading, selling, shipping, paying, suing -- anything to do with transactions -- goes in TGB&U.

Damn! Denied having my cow again! :D ;)

There was a recent thread on this topic a few weeks (months?) ago, and the general consensus was 48-72 hours. The longest I've ever had to wait for a response has been about 24 hours; most people are pretty swift in responding. When I'm trying to snag something, I check my e-mail compulsively as often as possible to find out if I got the item I wanted. :D

I tend to be more liberal when it comes to the amount of time I will give someone to get back to me than most other folks around here are. I will usually give a person a couple of days and then I will email again. I will then give another couple of days and email one last time. If the other person hasn't gotten back to me by the end of one week I will put the knife back up for sale. If it is a member of this forum that I know, or one that has a great rep, I will be even a little more lenient. However, I see no problem with putting the knife back up for sale if communication hasn't been made within 2 or 3 days.

If I am in the middle of a deal with someone I will check my emails many times a day. The "I don't check my emails very often" thing seems pretty lame to me.

Keith, I agree. I tend to be pretty lenient. I generally assume my Hotmail is f-ing with the people's email, which it frequently does, so then I'll email a 2nd message from another account... But I usually give quite a bit of time. I just sold a $175 knife and can't get a word back from the guy who said he'd take it. I don't want to stick it to him, but I was curious what the general consensus on this sort of thing is. Thanks!

PS: SWEET knife if your avatar! Wow!

In the event that your e mails are not being returned, try to send messages to their PM in that particular forum. If that fails, post a simple- "Attention _____, please contact me asap". This is a simple and potentially effective way to call their attention without having to go into any details/ reasons. Though in this instance , it may be obvious. :)

I have never had to wait all that long yet, guess I have been lucky. Personally when I am in the middle of making a deal I wil check my emails as often as possible. Actualy I am in the habbit of checking my email multiple times a day anyway, so I usually wouldn't have an email go unanswered for very long.

I feel that sh!t happens, computers crash, email gets temporarily lost, work, school, etc. I wouldn't have a problem waiting a couple of days for a response. After that I would send another email as a reminder, possibly giving them a way out of the deal if they so desired. I would just hope that if the person knew they would be away for a few days they would have informed me in advance. I have no problems waiting for a reasonable amount of time as long as I know that the buyer is just unavailable.

Honestly I agree that the "I don't check my mail often" is a BS excuse. Even if you don't check your mail at least once a day as a rul, if you are in the middle of making a deal you should really make the extra effort.

If I ever do sell a knife, I will clearly state in my post that the first E-Mail that says, I'll take it" will get it.

I have been involved in two purchases where I and someone else were the first to see the sale offer, and responded simultaneously. In both cases, I sent the E-mail before making my thread posting, and the other person did the opposite, posting in the thread first. In both cases, the seller gave the E-mail precedence.

Thanks for all your input. The buyer was threatened castration by the boss, which I can completely understand, so s-happens, you know! I suppose the best way for future reference is to have a disclaimer like "If I do not receive confirmation of payment sent within 48 hours of receiving initial communication from you, the knife will be offered for trade or sale again and your money, if received, will be returned..." something like that.
