How long does getting or having a new knife satisfy you before you're ready for your next new knife ?

I'm not talking about preorders you have now or seeing your grail fs.Preorders do count as a fix tho.

I suppose we could also add seeing a knife at a really good price on the fs forum into the mix too. Trades would be ok.

I used to be ready for a new knife very soon after I got a new knife but I have pretty have everything I want, for the last few months at least except for a ZT 561.

Ooh, now that I just got this big one, I need a new small one. Now that I got this lightweight, I need a hefty sucker. This new folder demands an increase in my number of fixed. And I must adjust my production to custom ratio. Carbon fiber and super alloy? Let's cleanse the palette with classic wood and carbon steel.

It depends on how much I can handle the knife, and the more I can use it, the more the knife fills the role. It doesn't take long though before I want a new one.

Way too soon. I finally picked up a Spyderco Military a couple of days ago and I immediately decided that I "need" another variant. :o

For me, it depends on the "hobby phase" I'm in. Right now, it's knives, so I've been ordering about 3 knives a week.

When I transition to RC planes, RC trucks, guns, airguns, or woodworking, I won't buy any for months or years at a time. I think I have about 50 knives now. It seems pretty crazy, but I really do enjoy switching them up pretty often. "Variety is the spice of life" really works for me. I do it with watches too.

In knives, I just re-discovered traditional folders. I just got a Case Peanut, Case Russlock, and am thinking about a Buck Companion. If we're honest with ourselves, there's very few knife duties we can't do with a small folding knife with a sharp blade or two. I find that a well-finished traditional knife is satisfying in a way that today's tactical knives just aren't. I find myself taking it out just to look at it a lot more often. Appreciating the hand-finishing and finish that goes into them. Most of mine are US-made too, and that makes me very proud as well.

All of the knives in this picture are from the past month, except the old Delica and the bottom folder:

I've got a new Remington Boy Scout knife on the way, which was made on the original tooling from 1923 at Remington's US factory. ($56, amazon) This will be like carrying a Victorinox Soldier, but with a touch more sentiment to it.

Only as long as it takes for a knife to be released that I didn't know that I needed...

The last several hundred dollars I've spent on knives have gone to Spyderco.

thankfully ive been able to stay on budget so, my fix lasts me about 4 weeks, or until the first of any month, plus holiday bonuses, special occasions, or if I happen to wander into a knife store like plaza cutlery lol

A few days. I get about 6-7 new knives a month, on average, some months, lean others, heavy.

Last time I placed an order, I just paid by the pound.

Think my Ritter Grip/ Sway back jack are gonne cover me for a bit. Got to save up scratch for a forum CF/M4 Rift, and money is tight sonit is gonna take a few months. That and an iPad 3 are dominating my budget planning ATM.

2 months. Pretty much like clockwork. I didn't realize it until I started to look at my purchasing pattern, but a new knife tides me over for almost exactly 60 days.

I'm amazed that taxes haven't come up. I got some back and some cash went out... I budget though.

I'm glad to see that I'm not alone! I'd say that a fix only lasts a couple days at the most. If I don't have the ability to go out and purchase a new knife or if there isn't one that I like, I usually take to tinkering around with what I have. Lately I've been taking things apart and polishing bushings, trying different lubricants, diy stonewash (not suggested) etc. Anyway, I had better think of new ways to extend the time period of my fix if I know what's good for me.......

it's so bad that i'm already looking for new knives while i am waiting for the latest order to come in the mail. i tend to be a binge buyer. i'll buy 10 knives in a month or 2, then i won't by one for 6 months.

I dunno really, never paid enough attention... but I just ordered one today, a 4.5" Gung Ho (Fairbairn/Sykes repro, made in Ohio by the folks at ESA Swords), so lemme see how long it takes to wear off, and I'll get back to you. ;)

I used to be buying several a month but as of now, I feel my collection is at a good point for a small break. All I'm REALLY wanting this year is the 0561 and Tilt I have on pre-order, and possibly an XM-18 (If I get lucky at ECCKS). Now I'm SURE there will be several more throughout the year but I like to (try to) convince myself otherwise.
