I don’t know if this is the appropriate place to post this question, if not please accept my apologies.

I was wondering how long is too long to wait for someone to reply after they have received your payment for a knife. I recently bought a knife off of the exchange from a particular individual and after confirming his reception of my payment, has appeared to drop off the face of the planet…well, that is not totally correct as he has managed to post here on bladeforums, but yet has ignored several of my emails regarding a status update.

It was confirmed that this person received my money one week ago, with the promise to ship the knife the following Monday (he said he was going out of town that Friday for the weekend, but didn’t say why he couldn’t have shipped the item either Thursday (day after he got my payment) or Friday. He elected to not notify of this delay until after he received my payment, which at that point was not that big of a deal. However, it is now two days after he said he would send me the knife, and as I said above, he has yet to respond to any of my emails, even though he told me that he would email me with the confirmation number monday (the 10th).

I consider myself to be a rational individual, and I feel that I am being mistreated (I mean, after all I gave the guy by cash in good faith), and feel like I (as the freakin’ customer) have been gracious concerning his travel plans after told me (not asked) that he would not ship asap. Anyway, this was my first experience with the “exchange” forum, and I am wondering if you all think that I am over-reacting, or if I should pursue a fraud claim via paypal, or some other option.

I realize that life happens and things to not always go as we plan, but I KNOW this person had access to the internet so I see no reason why he could not email me with the status.

I am keeping this individual’s name out of this message intentionally because I do not wish to bad mouth him if my experience is somehow standard for those of you who buy and sell off these forums. If you confirm my feelings that I am being taken for a ride, then I will gladly give you all information concerning the identity of this individual that I have.

Again, I feel that I am being wronged, but I confess to lack of experience in this issue and am looking for any wisdom you all might be able to share (even if that wisdom is to sit still for a few more days).

Thanks,
Damon

Personally, I'd be concerned after two weeks. And personally, I wouldn't advertise sale items at the same time I was planning a trip out of town, but emergencies happen.

Good Luck,
Bob

Well, I understand your eagerness to get your knife, and it's true that this person could be more courteous, but I don't think enough time has passed yet to be concerned that you won't receive your knife. People have lives, stuff happens, etc. Give him at least until next week before getting too freaked.

Welcome to Bladeforums.

In my opinion, the seller could do a better job of communicating, but as has been said above, life happens.

If I understand correctly, the seller was paid a week ago (Say May 4) and was going to mail the item the next Monday which would be May 9.

Who knows why the delay, but if it was mailed on May 9, you would have received it today at best. I agree that you should give it another day or two.

---just to clarify, I'm not miffed that I have not gotten my knife yet, just that I have not gotten any replies to my emails or been given any status report that the knife was actually shipped on the day promised.

thanks for the replies

No worries - I agree - better communication would be better.

I see now that the "welcome" wan't necessarily appropriate given your register date :footinmou

no worries, if my name has "new" in it you'd naturally think I was “new”...come to think of it, i should probably change that thing.

anyway, thanks for the welcome none the less...i am still very much "new" to most of the info on these boards. :)

You could politely post on the original for sale thread an inquiry of the tracking information. Life happens, give it a bit more time. The seller may have problems with their email account. Since you are registered member, you don't have the ablity to use the private messaging function.

I hope that everything works out for the both of you.

People that don't have time to ship their knives in a prompt way shouldn't be selling them,,especially on Internet forums where acting in a prompt, courteous and overtly trustworthy manor is the key to others being willing to do business with you.

If the guy has had time and access to post to any other threads or sites, then he has had time to reply. He recieved the money, he owes you a knife or an explanation. I always trade phone numbers just in case the need is there and it also takes some of the anonymity away and shows some sincereity. It's a TRANSACTION for cryin out loud- supposed to be 2-WAY!
I can understand things happen but 1 week is more than enough time.
just my .02 (before taxes and inflation)

I think if you don't have the knife by Friday or Saturday I would consider posting something in this forum about him not keeping up his end of the deal. I would also not deal with this person again even if you do get the knife.

Cheers,
David

What Fisher of Men said, plus in the email you send him be sure to link this thread so he can see others are aware. It all comes down to communication, i.e. if you have time to post on the forum, you sure as heck have the time to respond to a fellow forum member after you've already received his payment on time! :grumpy:

I agree that delay do happens, but if he has managed to post here on BFC, wouldn't it be better just dropping me a note and letting me know the "status update"? Even a note in a related WTS thread, is better than nothing.
Just my 0.02 . . .

The idea to post on the original FS thread is a good one. I will try that...like you said, maybe his email is down.

Thanks all for the replies; I will keep you updated as to how it turns out.

ANd the tip to trade phone numbers is a good one too. i will do that next time.

Just wanted to say that the posting on the FS thread worked! He said the knife has been shipped and that he will email me with more info. Anyway, just wanted to thank you all for your help in this matter, and I will post again when it is totally resolved. :)

One or two more transactions like this and Greens won't be able to sell a Scagel for $1.00.

Your actions during an internet deal is a major indicator of integrity. You screw up too many deals and your name becomes mud.

On BFC all you have is your name, don't blow it!!!

Yes, I feel like you are overreacting, especially by considering filing a fraud claim, when he has only had your money for 7 days (as of 5/11 when you posted this). I'm not saying "greens" is totally guiltless, but maybe he did have e-mail problems, and possibly a valid reason (job circumstances, illness, or a variety of other reasons) for not getting your knife shipped right away. I was unaware one time my e-mail was not working until:
- I sent an e-mail to a BladeForums member, and I did not receive a reply.
- I posted a message in the forum saying I sent an e-mail, and asked if he received it - in the forum he said no.
- Just as a test, I sent an e-mail to myself at work from my home computer, and I did not receive it at work.
Just like anything in life (automobiles for example), e-mail is not 100% reliable.

It is not all that relevant here, but I will add that service times vary with any shipping service, and on rare occasions packages get delayed significantly or even lost (again, the point is nothing is 100% reliable).

While I really do understand your concern about the lack of communication and having sent money without receiving what you purchased, I feel by being a little more patient you could have kept this from becoming the issue that it has. I hope everything works out OK for both of you.
