how long Japanese short sword handle?????????

I never suggested they were historically accurate, just what the book stated as a guide. I'm sure many swords have tsukas smaller than the method describes.

Yes, most shinai are sold with a roughly thirteen inch handle. Ever seen how bulky kote are? Big hockey gloves, so you need much more room than when you're bare handed.

Now, twenty inches overall length, with a seven inch handle will almost be a wakizashi. You'll lose one inch for the habaki, and another three-eighths or so on the tsuba and seppa. The leaves you with about an eleven and a half inch blade. You need twelve to make a wakizashi. If you're going off of the Hayes video, than you're not exactly going by the book anyway, so you don't need to worry about that anyway! :D

Yes,,,,thats true too,,,the Hayes video is not showing how to make a real Katana the old-school way,,,,,its more like a short-cut to a Katana...

and my questions of this topic are about the sword Im starting out on first rather than trying to make a full size katana right away,,,,And BOY am I glad I did a dry run blade first,,,because this is a bit harder than it looked in the video.

My only real concern is that when Im done with this 20 inch sword, that it will go with the longer ones,,,like it was all part of a matched set....thats why I want to make sure the handle will look correct with the Katana.

Now about that "almost a wakizashi" thing you posted,,,,what do you mean?...what is the almost speaking of?...what would I needed to have done to have you say it clearly fits the manner of a wakizashi?
