How long to wait?

First, let me say I'm new to BF and new to knives...lost a little SOG I used to carry around and decided I'd like a new EDC. Since I don't believe in reinventing the wheel, I nosed around the Net and found a website with detailed, well-written knife reviews...that took me to my first folder, Benchmade 710HSSR, then to BF and Knife Forums. You sure can learn alot just watching the pros talk. Heard so many great things about Sebenza, and being newly bitten with the bug, bought a lg Sebenza from LAG3 (Leo)...great transaction and I love the knife. Not nearly as savy as all you folks, but even the untrained can tell good quality...this thing just sings when it's opened! Again, I've caught your bug...anyone got an extra sofa for when the wife catches on?

Guess I need to get to my question. After making a deal with someone (I'm buying another knife I found on BF ;) ), how long should one wait to hear from the seller after making payment, before starting to raise the flag? Sent payment (Paypal, was rec'd almost immediately) over 24 hours ago and I haven't heard from the seller. He's a BF gold member, so I assume he's good to go. Also, it's the weekend and people are out and about, etc...he may not get to e-mail as often as I would like. If you're like me, however, and I assume many of you knife lovers feel the same way about a new purchase, you want to know what's going on, when you can check out your newest "conquest," and you just generally feel more comfortable when the seller feeds you info ("I got the payment," "Knife is on the way, mailed today"). LAG3 was awesome...starting to get nervous about the other. Probably a good guy, and I won't start dropping names for some time, but after 24 hours I'd think contact would be appropriate. No return on e-mail requests for info, etc. Finally, I'm in the military (AF) and strongly believe in such virtues as honor, integrity, discipline, etc...I try to deal fairly and honestly with everyone and I guess I expect the same in return.

Again, what say you experts...how long should I wait before getting nervous?

Thanks.

Oh, one more thing if I may...what does "BTTT" mean?

First of all- Welcome to the Forums!

I completely understand your eagerness to receive your new toy. I find myself feeling the same way often. 99 and 44/100ths of the folks you'll meet here are heavily infested with the same bug, so they know the feeling too.

The same percentage are also upstanding, honorable types who esteem both knifecraft and knife collecting. They will go well out of their way to preserve the integrity of both.

Often, you will get a response in twenty-four hours or less about a deal you've made here, but do remember that this IS a holiday weekend, and the net does seem to move faster than "real life" sometimes. Many times, the seller will advise you when the item ships, and it is possible that, because of the holiday, your new knife may not even be in transit until Tuesday. (I know that's painful to hear, but sometimes you've gotta face the facts :D )

If it were me, I would be anxious too, but I would reserve panic and worry until Tuesday evening. Then I'd send another email, asking what was up.

Hang in there, and again, welcome to the Forums!

BTTT= "Back to the top". You'll usually see it in the for sale or trade listings when an item doesn't seem to be getting the attention that the lister would like. The good news is that after a few BTTT's the price often comes down. ;)

Haldir,

Welcome to BladeForums! I like your style already. You're a straight-shooter. As MacHete said, this is a holiday and it can get crazy. I'm like you, I want an answer NOW!

Stay patient and give it a day or so. If no answer, come back in here with a name. There are some pretty strong voices around here that can help your cause. I am 99% certain that that won't happen, though.

Now, be smart and just jump right into the custom world before you get too carried away with quality factory blades.;) At your rate, it's going to happen. BTW--How does a futon work for you?? ;)

Haldir00,

If you haven't heard anything back from the guy by Wednesday, feel-free to email me, and I'll see if I can help out somehow.

I agree witht the above, with the holiday weekend Tuesday would be more than reasonable. Also, it depends a little on when you PayPaled him. If it was late at night and he took off for the holiday weekend, he may not even know you paid him till he gets back.

Do a search of his User Name here and see if he's posted since you made your payment. If he's posting he probably has seen your e-mail. If there's been no sign of him I would think Wed. would be good to re-email him. By next week at this time it would be reasonable to get nervous.

If a seller was planning on going out of town he/she should be thoughtful enough to consider that before posting the item for sale. Deals take 5 minutes not 5 days. Just my .02.

Phillip

Gentlemen, thanks for all your input. Good news is I heard from my guy today...knife is in the mail. I've learned a few lessons from this experience...

One, knife folks -- like military folks, law enforcement folks, and probably the vast majority of folks -- are just plain good people trying to do their best. I read Burkstar's thread on trust...everytime I start to lose faith, someone like MacHete is there to welcome you, Blade747 offers a futon for when the wife finds out about my new hobby, or someone like glockman99 is willing to get involved to make things right. Appreciate all the input, guys.

Two, despite wanting to have it NOW, the wait/anticipation is part of the jazz. It churns my gut not to have the next one here before the 3-day weekend and having to wait til Tues at the earliest, but that's not something I can control. Easy to recognize, hard to fix. Gotta be patient with the other folks, too. I was fortunate enough to have all day free (lawn mowed, truck washed, house cleaned yesterday) to wait for an e-mail I thought should've been there already...the guy on the other end might have had plenty to deal with in the past 48 hours and had a hard time making contact. Lesson learned.

Three, you guys are either very wealthy or very poor to be able to indulge the knife habit...I checked out Coop's photo collection...man am I in trouble!

Thanks, again, for the input...looking forward to learning more from you guys by surfing the forums.
