No Donald, your assumption is correct.
He was left without rations or a means of transportation.
Supposedly, the last vehicle in the convoy was supposed to pick him up, but as the convoy was stretched out over many miles, the driver of the last vehicle had no way of knowing that he was indeed, the last vehicle.
Almost every mistake that could be made WAS made, and this young marine died needlessly because of it.
The real heartbreaker was that he maintained his sense of discipline right up to the end. According to reports, his gear was arranged as neatly as if he were preparing for an inspection.

I live in Phoenix, Arizona. First thing, the desert around Phoenix down to the border looks like there would being a fair amount of water for all the plants down here. Mistake number 1, which a lot illegals do down here, and they make this mistake only once.
As for using cactus for water goodluck, you will not get enough water to live. The only really useful cactus is pricky pear,but since you are a city slicker you will not be carry a useful knife

If anybody ever get lost in a tropical jungle and he doesn't know what to eat because there are lots of things in the jungle that are poisonous, keep a sharp lookout for a monkey.

This is a tale told to me eons ago by some elder who probably thought we the young suburban urchins might take part in a foolhardy adventure and wandered off in the nearby jungle.

Watch that monkey very carefully. Anything that the monkey eats, humans can too.

If the monkey is on a diet, you are in big trouble! Anyway, follow that ape until he gets hungry.
