first...it depends ENTIRELY on the style. on a simple knife...probably 15 hours starting up....you should be able to get it down to about 6 after lots of practice and a lot of tools.
My first few took in the neighborhood of 40 hours each. I'm down to about half that now. As for calendar time, I also have to allow time while the blade is away for heat treat and for sheath making.
Let's see - if I work a 40 hour week I can turn out two knives at a profit of about $40 - $60 each (Canadian). So much for full time knifemaking.
But hmmm.... if I had a couple of Bader grinders - and a mill (CNC??)- and a surface grinder - and a heat treat oven - and someone like Tom Mayo working for me.....
