How many belts?

Just one belt for me, but the only thing attached to it is my belt knife sheath. Everything else goes in a pack or a pocket.

The idea of a second belt or baldric is neat, though. I might try it out this winter, when I go snowshoeing - a baldric hung over top of my coat would definitely provide easy access to my gear.

All the best,

- Mike

I attach my big knife on my belt that holds my pants. Other equipment goes on the gun belt.

I used to use a GI belt with harness, all my gear on the belt and sleeping blanket on the harness, but it fell out of favor for lighter, more comfortable packs. I am a one belt person now. Knife only.

I am experimenting with vests, the baldric is too unbalanced for me.

I made myself a belt from good thick 10-12 oz leather from a shoulder of leather that I buy for making sheaths. Its almost like a gun belt, but just a tad thinner. At just a tad under 2 inches thick it just fits through the widest belt loops found on jeans.

Its fairly stiff, with no fancy embellishments and gave it a nice brown tan color. Holds up the pants and carrys the fixed blade and folders well. I also use good stiff suspenders to hold everything up. That belt may very well last the rest of my lifetime.

I have learned that Johnny is not trustworthy anymore. He has lately been infected by the dreaded 'Leather and Steel' disease.

This may be what is informing this thread.

I've been running two belts recently.

Nice leather to hold that pants up and to act as a strop when needed.

LA Police Gear riggers-belt-like-object to hold my Blindhorse Knives Bushcrafter on a home made drop loop and my Expedition H3 pouch, which holds my cell phone, compass, pace beads, map, Swisstool Spirit, and PSK.

I hate to have anything on my belt when I am hiking or hunting. I also hate to have too much in the pockets. I carry most things in my pack. One belt for me!

I used to use a second belt, great for keeping stuff easily accessible when you're wearing jackets. Also great because it's easy to put stuff on and strip it off when you need to...without fiddling with threading things off and on between belts loops.

(I'm on the left, you can see the 2nd belt below the FalconII waiststrap)

You can also then wear it baldric style if you ever needed to:

But ever since I started using a pack with a proper waistbelt, the second belt just felt like it was in the way. I also only carry my Fixed blade and Multitool on the belt now (used to carry PSK and canteen as well), so I don't mind only wearing one belt with my pants. I might go back to the 2nd belt though, when the weather gets colder again.

Argh rksoon. Your not allowed to change the batbelt! I really liked your idea of putting the psk, knife, and canteen on the same belt.

I have no solid answer for this.

Intellectually, I like equipment belts best. a small lightweight narrrow pants belt for pants and a seperate belt for stuff.

The reality is that it's often hard to easily change out your gear on either type of belt, and equipment belts can be hard to take off/put on/ move around.

Another reality is that I'm left handed and it's a stone cold bitch to remove knives and change carry constantly on a regular pants belt. Example: I live in CA, people here can be dumb. I have a couple small EDCs that are shop knives- they both have sheaths that also hold pens and mini prybars, just tools. But I can't take them into the bank with me, because even a 3 inch fixed blade is a DANGEROUS WEAPON. I am allowed to take my larger folders, in pouches on my belt. Whatever, left handedness makes it harder to swap out left hand carry stuff.

I have more than one equipment belts at this point. I am dead solid sold on one for dayhiking or ultralight overnighting, wherever I may wear a non frame pack. well worth it, especially since a good belt will go over clothing when it's butt freezing cold and can be tossed on the shoulder baldric style when making midnight latrine runs.

Around town, I still experiment.....

Haha, things are always changing. Might go back to it :). I think if I could switch to a more hip-conforming GI canteen and improvise a drop loop for it so it doesn't get in the way of a pack waistbelt...I might do it again. I'd also need to find a thinner belt with a slim buckle for the pants. For now, the PSK is in the pockets, and the canteen is on the pack.

The best thing about the separate equipment belt for me, is having everything all in one spot. I just grab it, strap it on, and go .

I like the gearslinger hip style bags from Maxpedition. If you wear them under a pack it puts all your necessary gear right at hand level-you can carry your gun there to hide from the sheeple, your navigation equipment, a water bottle, etc. That way you don't have to strip the pack off to get gear every 10 minutes, and it's out of the way of the lumbar pads.

What you need (paraphrase I need) is a short drop down attachment to go through your sheath, but that attaches to your belt by velcro or snap buttons. That way you can tear it off your belt when you need to, or stick it back on without undoing your main belt. Or you can use Boomstick's simple trick of dangling your sheath using a carbiner.
