I was going through my knives today splitting out the different brands into a couple more Spyderpacs this morning, and I got to wondering how many different blade steels I had in my collection. So I went through them and counted. Unless I've missed some, I have 27 different steel types.

In no particular order:

CTS-HXP
12C27
Acuto +
CPM-M4
VG-10
CPM S30V
440B
440C
440V
420HC
8CR13MOV
9CR13MOV
Gin1
Gin2
H1
AUS6
AUS8
N690Co
ZDP-189
154CM
CTS BD1
CPM S35VN
M390
Elmax
C75 Carbon
14C28n
ATS-55
CPM D2

I was really surprised that I had so many different steels among the knives in my collection. How many do you guys have?

What?... ...no O1.

Heck, no A2, D2, or even CPM 3V.

Or, some of my favorites, 5160 and 52100.

All joking aside, A fine selection of steels in your collection.

Whups, missed writing down D2. I have at least a few D2 knives. BM Bone Collector, DPX Hest 2.0, Kershaw Leek Composite.

Don't think that I have any of the others though.

Good thread topic.

Benchmade: s30v, 145cm, M4, D2
Kershaw/ZT: Sandvik 14c28n, D2, 440c, 420hc, s30v, Damascus, ZDP-189, Aogami Super Gold 2
Spyderco: M390, s30v, ZDP-189, Aogami Super Blue
CRK: s35vn
Strider: CPM-154, s35vn
Microtech: s35vn
Misc: 1095, 8cr13mov
And many more low-end steels I'm sure I'm forgetting.

I used to own knives with: s60v/440v, ElMax, s110v, CTS-XHP, Acuto +, Aus 8, VG10, Ceramic

I really want to get my hands on s90v, s125v, and Vanax75/35 someday.

Stainless: VG-10, S30V, 154CM, CPM154, 420HC, ZDP-189, old Cold Steel San Mai (?) from late '80's.

Non-stainless: A2, O-1, 52100, SR101, CPM-M4, L6.

52100 and 154CM are my favorites in each category. I like their combinations of toughness, edge holding, corrosion resistance, and ease of maintenance.

I've owned literally almost every type of knife steel there is on the planet throughout my knife collecting career. My favorite steel on the stainless side remains to be 154cm and my favorite steel on the HC side is INFI! :D

Carbon:
1075
1080
1084
1095

Tool:
O1

Stainless:
ATS34
154CM
12c27
440C

Looks like that's about it. I'll be buying a 5160 blade this year, but everything else on my to-buy list will be made of one of the already listed steels.

All super steels got bumped in favor of better designs by personal favorite makers.

S30V, 154cm, 14c28n, 12c27, ATS-34, 440C, 420HC, VG-10, 8cr13MoV, N690Co, "400 Series stainless", whatever Victorious uses, D2, SK5, and 1095.

All the steels I currently or have owned:

8Cr13MoV
14C28N
VG-10
154CM
440C
1095
Alabama Damascus

Steels I currently own:
14C28N
8Cr13MoV
1095
440C

Steels I have on the way:
Elmax
CPM-D2

Let's see, in no particular order:

12c27
14c28n
D2
440C
S30V
S35VN
154CM
CPM-154
M4 (on the way)
Acuto
1095
Ats-34
AUS-8

That's all I can think of right now...

Got nothing new to add. Nice selection from you folks.
Perhaps my favorite blades are composites...using either ZDP-189 or D2 as the edge.

Don Greenaway Custom - Stainless Damascus
Jeff Chaffee Custom - BG-42
Chris Reeve Ti-Lock, Microtech Whale Shark - CPM-S35VN
Kershaw Spec Bump, Spyderco Anso Zulu - CPM-S30V
ZT 0551 - Elmax
Spyderco Gayle Bradley - CPM-M4
Spyderco Ladybug(s), Spyderco Assist, Beretta Trident(3), A.G. Russell Seki-Cut folder - VG10
Benchmade Sibert MPR - M390
Al Mar SLB - AUS8

VG-10
CPM S30V
440A(yeah, I have a handful of cheap junky knives)
440C
420HC
7cr13
8CR13MOV
9CR13MOV
14C28N
AUS6
AUS8/AUS8A(I see knives listed both ways, but I also heard 8 and 8A are the same, so...)
4116
1055
1075
1085
1095
1095 Cro-Van
5160
L6
SK-5

Additions since this was first posted:
S110V
D2
CTS BD-1
SKS-51
5Cr13MoV
3Cr13MoV(Walmart Kershaw)
65Mn
AFNOR XC75
Acuto +

X-15 TN

I thought I had a cheap United Cutlery AUS-4 thing somewhere, but I can't actually find a knife listed with that steel that I own, so maybe I'm mistaken.

Besides slipjoints, I only have a couple (less than 5) modern knives.

Those include:
8Cr13Mov
420HC
AUS8

The slipjoints are carbon/ stainless.

I mostly collect knives for the steel these days. Just keeps it interesting.

Stainless:
CPM-S90V
CTS-204P
Elmax
N690
M390
D2
154CM
CPM-154
San Mai-III
CPM-M4
CTS-20CP
CTS-XHP
ZDP-189
And, of course, CPM-S30V :)

Tool steels:
W2
52100

My favourite? Probably M390 because its a great all-rounder. Also CPM-M4, preferably coated. Awesome steels both!

I would really like some Duratech 20CV because its not that common which adds to the fun.

XC90
L6
1095 Cro-Van
1095
1085 (like it more than the 1095 O.o)
420 HC

And some real nice vintage German stainless that sharpens easier than any other and holds a razor sharp edge.

Plus Victorinox, I'd really like to know what they use.

Funny it wasn't intentional, but looking at my small collection every knife is a different blade steel. Looks like 10 all together:

Cold Steel Recon 1 - AUS-8
Spyderco Breeden Rescue - VG10
Spyderco Southard - CTS-204P
Spyderco Air - M4
ZT 0550 - S35VN
ZT 0560 - S110V/14C28N
Hest 2.0f - D2
Emerson Roadhouse - 154CM
Bark River Canadian Special - A2
SAKs - Rostfrei or whatever they're calling it.
