I've noticed a couple of folks mention Victorinox and Wenger. Any of you guys find it odd that such well known and respected companies use "Mystery Steel"? I went looking and couldn't fins a single firm reference as to what exact steel they use. I wonder if that lets them change the steel from time to time without changing their specs?

1074 I think. whatever is in the opinel
SAK steel, whatever that stainless is.
and whatever the carbon Mora is.

I mostly collect knives for the steel these days. Just keeps it interesting.

Stainless:
CPM-S90V
CTS-204P
Elmax
N690
M390
D2
154CM
CPM-154
San Mai-III
CPM-M4
CTS-20CP
CTS-XHP
ZDP-189
And, of course, CPM-S30V :)

Tool steels:
W2
52100

My favourite? Probably M390 because its a great all-rounder. Also CPM-M4, preferably coated. Awesome steels both!

I would really like some Duratech 20CV because its not that common which adds to the fun.
a few in your stainless category are both tool steels and stainless, and at least one is a tool steel and NOT stainless(cpm m4)
;)

Everything except YXR7, Supracore/MPL-1, 4V, and the Rex line of steels ( used to have Rex 20/M62 but it's gone), SRS 15, Sleipner, PD-1, Cowry Y&X.

Can't really think of anything else I've seen used in a knife

Note* reading through Jim A.'s I realized I don't have Vanax steels, or any of the A11 class steels either.

Doh, well spotted... M4 should be in the tool steel list. :o

I think D2 is referred to as a semi-stainless? Which are the others?

Victorinox steel is:
The martensitic stainless steel alloy used for the cutting blades is optimized for high toughness and corrosion resistance and has a composition of 15% chromium, 0.60% silicon, 0.52% carbon, 0.50% molybdenum, and 0.45% manganese and is designated X55CrMo14 or 1.4110 according to Victorinox. After a hardening process at 1040 °C and annealing at 160 °C the blades achieve an average blade steel hardness of 56 HRC. This steel hardness is suitable for practical use and easy resharpening, but less than achieved in stainless steel alloys used for blades optimized for high wear resistance.[17][18][19]

Interesting, I did not realize how many different steels I had! I do notice a trend though, half of my collection are made up of three steel types: s30, s35, and 154

pretty much all the powdered steels you listed are tool steels. m390, all the cts and cpm steels (maybe not cpm 154? though it might be) nearly anything we here on bf call "super steels" originated as tool steels and were simply adopted into the knife world for their wear resistance. I believe zdp 189 and Aogami Super Blue are two on your list that were actually designed from the ground up to be blade steels.

and d2 has the necessary percentage of chromium to be called stainless, yet its composition renders very little of that chromium to be used for actual corrosion resistance, so in practice it is not that stainless. though it is a tool steel.

Probably, but I doubt that they're going to downgrade their steel at the cost of performance.

My collection:
X55CrMo14
154cm
Sandvik 14c28n
8Cr13MoV
Krupp 4116
Aogami Blue #2
420HC
CPM-D2
Sandvik 12c27
440A
7Cr17MoV
VG-10
n690co
L6
AUS-8
SK-5/1080
3Cr13
440C (BM Rescue 5 so may technically not be a knife)
Wenger's steel

I should probably look into more higher end steels, but the X55CrMo14, 154cm, and 14c28n are really working well for me.
