How many compression lock models are there?

Hi. I was looking at the compression lock, and thought it seemed pretty interesting. I've had good experience with Spyderco in the past, and from all accounts, this is a good locking mechanism.

What I'm wondering is why I cant seem to find a midrange Seki-City VG-10 type with a full flat grind and compression lock just to try it out. The patent was applied for 10 years ago this month, and with the positive impressions from the community, I figured Spyderco would have compression lock models sprinkled here and there through each of their product ranges, all the way down to the Byrd line, even.

So, anyway, what models are there that use it? All I could find were the Paramilitary and the Vesuvius.

The superhawk is made in Seki City, VG-10, and compression lock. The superleaf is also all of the above. Since I don't have my superleaf in yet, this gratuitous pic is only the superhawk.

Lol. That's a great knife, but by "midrange" I meant in the same price category as a Seki City Delica. Also, I'd prefer a full flat ground leaf shaped blade to try out the lock as an EDC.

As much as I love hawkbills, I use them as gardening knives. I'd never pay over $50 for a gardening knife, let alone $150. Which reminds me, I should order a couple Byrd Crossbills....

I agree it would be nice to see the Compression Lock on something with FRCP (the replacement for FRN). However, you're probably best off getting the lightweight Manix when it comes out. The caged Ball Lock isn't a compression lock, but is the closest you'll find at that price range.

Ah, but that defeats the purpose of me wanting a compression lock knife "just to try it out."

Honestly, I think there should be a Byrd knife with a compression lock just to get people hooked on the concept.

Great list! That's a heck of a lot of midlock models, not that it's surprising. Just to be picky, don't they use 2 different slip-it/slip joint mechanisms? On the spyderco site they list the slip-its (Urban, UKPK) separately from the traditional slip-joints (Bug line, Kiwi). There's definitely a difference in the mechanism, with the slip-it using almost a backlock-like detent in the tang to hold the blade open and a halfway stop point, while the slip-joints don't have the pronounced detent to lock it open. *Edit:I guess it just groups together all the "slip it" style mechanisms, cause the ball bearing slip it in the Terzuola is way different than the others.

As for the comp lock, I'm happy that the Yojimbo 2 is adding one to the current lineup (only 2 comp lock models right now!?), and hopefully the L'il Temp 2 will come around in the next year or so. I love the comp lock and would like to see it used more. The Yo 2 and Lil Temp 2 will be grand addition..then, how 'bout an ATR 2??:D:cool:

Is Spyderco the only company that uses compression locks?
There may be one or more individual knifemakers licensed to use it, and some unauthorized stuff coming out of China, but I believe Spyderco is still the only knife company using it legally, since it's their patent and, AFAIK, has not expired or been licensed to any other knife manufacturer.

I wasn't familiar with that one so I Googled it...very interesting design.

I would love it if they made the Spyderco S with a solid blade. There aren't any other models that size with a compression lock in their lineup. I got one at a great price (I think it is still their cheapest comp. lock model) and bought it to try the compression lock even though I didn't like the webbed design in the blade. I became a fan of the comp. lock since then. I now own a ParaMilitary and I can't wait for the Dialex Jr. to be released.
