How many countries???? on da board???

OK registered and card carrying

I thought about registering in the early nineties... Both Great-Grandmothers were full Cherokee of the Eastern Band in WNC, so I qualified. Proud though I was, I decided not to since a 6'3", blonde, green eyed guy applying for tribal membership might offend some. ;)

It's not about blonde hair and green eyes. It's about the degree of indian blood. If you have their Dawes Rolls numbers, you should definitely do it. It is worth it. Do you know the procedure to apply for your BIA CDIB card? You have to get that first before you can apply for membership with the Cherokee Nation.

I believe that Native Americans are the only race that has to actually prove their lineage in order to be a registered member of the race. I'm not sure how many tribes participate. Might be only the Five Civilized Tribes.

All other races, often it only takes 1 drop of blood of a race to quality you as a member of that race. And no proof is required.

Go for your cards. You are entitled to be registered and proud of it. All of my siblings are registered. I've met two of the Principal Chiefs for the Cheroke Nation - Ross Swimmer and Wilma Mankiller.

My mother bequeathed her Cherokee name to me, which was bestowed upon her by her grandfather. It is "Quotinah." We believe that it was a name that he created just for her as we have never been able to track it down anywhere nor to find out a meaning for it.

Cool! I was concerned about "poser" backlash during the registration process. I'm not looking to just get in on Casino profits from the the WNC Reservation or something of that nature. My motivation was about heritage. I'll see if I can't get more info from my Dad.

You will find that many full-bloods are rather snobbish about those of us who are of lesser degree of blood. Too bad, so sad. It's just the way it is. It's unfortunate that the Cherokee Language is not being spoken or learned as it was, but they're working on that.

If your dad or other relatives from your grandmothers are registered with the BIA, it should be easier to track down their registration numbers. You may or may not be eligible for any of the Casino $$$ anyway. I think each tribe handles it differently in the way the profits are distributed. And your degree of Indian Blood would factor into that.

Do it because you are proud of your heritage. You are entitled to be registered and card-carrying. You can vote in tribal elections and for the Principal Chief. Well, I don't know if the WNC Cherokees are affiliated in that manner with the OK ones. I don't follow the politics that closely.

Keep me posted!

O-si-yo!
