How many do you own?

a shop one 15" AK and a 16" WWII. I've given about a half dozen others away to friends family that were smitten by them.

I used to collect willy-nilly, but now I have a theme.

In my meager collection (but never beyond selling when my straits are dire)

The Rod Allen Hanshee (satisal)
21" Foxy Fighter (chandan)
Stag YCS karda
Stag Kumar Karda
Stag JKM (karda)
Stag Kerambit
Stag Seax
Horn Trishul
15" Salyan (chandan)
Horn AK Bowie with Dan Koster matching skinner

At Home in America (because japanese customs said no)
Cherokee Special Bowie
Manjushree
HI Katana
I have never even touched these items in america because I havent been home since I bought them. Makes you crazy, doesnt it!?

Sometimes our definition of "needs" is fluid. Especially when one is infected.

They used to say always watch out for the man who only has one gun; he knows how to use it.

Thats why I have 15 :o

No Katanas in Japan?

At least they didn't confiscate them...

I've got four...

20" 37 oz. Sher WWII with Chiruwa Horn Handle
20" 33 oz. Bura M43 with Funky Horn Handle
16.5" 23 oz. Bura Village WWII with Chiruwa Horn Handle
15" 20 oz. Kumar Ang Khola with Carved Horn Handle

On the way...

16.5" 23 oz. Sher Ang Khola with Chiruwa Dark Neem Handle
13.75" 10 oz. Kumar Trisul with Elk Antler Handle

One or both of the new ones is likely to end up a gift... My brother has a birthday on the way (and Christmas isn't that far off).

I figured I'd be done by now, and technically, I have what I wanted - one for day-to-day use and the emergency kit and one that's just cool. I mean, what kind of freak buys a bunch of crooked knives?

But, I find I now need a Bura Villager Pen Knife with unpolished black horn handle and a nice satin finish, a 30" Sirupati, a 22" GRS or heavy Ang Khola, and a really light-colored, wood handled village WWII or something with a nice satin finish to the blade.

Oh Yeah! A Karda - are there village Kardas? Maybe one that matches the Pen Knife. And, of course at least one sword... Oh, and something 18" since everyone says that's such a great size... Oops, almost forgot, have to get a Foxy Folly at some point...

Its not that the Japanese dotn allow us to own katanas. We have all kinds of swords in Japan. They just dont allow anyone to own a sword that wasnt made by a japanese person.
Its basically an anti-imports law.

Sassas, I've got to hand it to you. I have a few more knives than this, but you have 6 great knives there that are almost totally one of kind. The Village WWII is the most common, with several made, but every one of the others is a one off, or maybe two in the case of the big chiruwa WWII. You either have impeccable taste and great selective powers for a new guy, or are amazingly lucky! Either way you have a fantastic start going there.

I have the twin of your 15" 20 oz. Kumar AK with red scabbard, except mine is carved chandan that is really pretty as well. Isn't it funny how the carved handle feels almost smooth when you grab it? Nice and grippy. I've been following your knives pretty closely because you have sharked me out of at least three of them. :D

Good job! ;)

SASSAS does have some very unique kukris. I'm curious about the "funky horn handle".? What's "funky" about it? A pic would be cool.

Didn't you manage to score a rare large (was it 25"? 30"?) GS?

What happened to that?

Thanks, I've been pretty fortunate - and there is a ton of great information scattered throughout the forum to base decisions on. This is a really open and free sharing community.

I think I've been more lucky than good though. I'm thinking a lot of the regulars already have a lot invested in models the size I've been picking up. The small blades seem to be jumping off the list really quickly. Some of the unique swords went off right as I had finally broken down and was ready to send an e-mail (that two-edged bastard sword and the light neapolitan  sword). I'm also kicking myself on a couple (like one particular light handled villager and a horn village Pen knife). I'm going to have to get a second job.

The carved handle is realy nice. I was kind of nervous about it until I got it. In the picture, it looked kind of slick. When I got it and saw that the carving actually made it a lot less slick than a normal polished handle I was happily surprised.

It's here... I'm going to update the thread on the three pin handle with some pictures as soon as I get a battery for my camera. I noticed looking back that Bura has done a couple similar handles with two pins. One of them had a picture of just the handle (in the same black horn IIRC), but I forgot the thread number.

SASSAS, Okay, so it's got 3 fastening rivets as opposed to the standard 2. Nothing wrong with that. Looks pretty slick.

I did. I bent the first one and sent it to Norman. He resurrected it.
I have another 25" in the mail to me as we speak.
That one is going to be rebuilt into a combat-only khukuri by Dan Koster.
The blade will be retempered like a katana, with a hamon from cho to kissaki.
(kissaki is the point of the blade, the hamon actually comes up to the spine of the blade about 1" from the tip)
then I think Im going to have Japanese style handle and a wooden saya (sheath) for it.
I intend to wear it as my wakizashi.

How many? Enough to get the job done, with many given to sons, sons-in-law, and friends, and *always*c room for one more :D

That's right Danny, I recall now that you did have a 30" Gelbu made at one time didn't you? Earlier in 2004 wasn't it? Did you sell that beast?
