How many Edge Pro Blanks do you have/need?

Here is a pic of the K390 at 64rc using a 74,45, 30, 20 and 9micron sheet. Not the best picture of the edge but it will give you an idea of the outcome

NICE. :D

I don't go all the way up anymore, like to take advantage of those aggressive carbides. :D

The 400 grit stone leaves a nice semi polished edge that is very aggressive.

As an added note when I reprofiled the K294 knife to 12 degrees per side I had to drop down to the 320 grit stone because K294 is so wear resistant the 400 grit stone just skated right over the edge, and that's at .010" behind the edge.

I know we are getting off topic but I only took it down to 9micron at 25deg inclusive to see how polished that edge could get. Amazingly enough it still has that very toothy feel and has held that edge VERY well. This steel has truly impressed me!

Jim,

Why didn't you use the ATOMA diamond plates up to 600 on the K294?? Just curious.

To the OP. I usually keep about a dozen spare mounts on hand for my EP

As an added note when I reprofiled the K294 knife to 12 degrees per side ....

Ankerson,

How are the angles measured on the Edge Pro? I've watched your youtube videos and did not notice any discussion of the settings.

Are the colored marks supposed to be on the bottom or the top of the plastic attachment piece for corresponding angle measurements?

Thanks.

1/4in Congress Stones ordered....I know I won't sharpen as much as others with these stones, but heck it was ~$5 more.

Just call up and ask to make sure they stock the type "p". They stated in the first link they try to always have it in stock.

In this case yes (trying to keep a straight face). The resin prevents the AO/SC/Diamond from being ripped out/off. If it wasn't hard it would rip out and you would have some expensive paper with no cut to it.

Ok, 263x is where it is at. It is the harder Type P film and comes in a wide range of grit/microns. Unfortunately it is not PSA, but I can get light adhesive elsewhere. (There is no other Alum Oxide lapping film that is "hard" and has the wide range of particle size). Unfortunately, the only company that will sell it in 1-5 sheets at a time is R.S. Hughes. There pricing is certainly reasonable, but they ~may~ get cha with shipping as per this post:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/376530-3M-Micro-Abrasive-Film?p=3414476#post3414476

I am going to call them tomorrow to verify shipping costs. If the shipping is through the roof, not sure what to do as no other websites sells this particular product in such low quantities.

Spoke to R.S. Hughes on the phone....was surprised when a human picked up right away this early in the morning. Good stuff.

They have the .3 micron stuff in stock in a warehouse in Long Island, NY so that will ship out for ~$6. The .05 and 3 micron stuff will come made to order from 3M and shipped to the MA warehouse. That will ship to me in roughly 2 weeks for another $6.

Now time for the EdgePro stuff.....

Let us know how you like the films. Once you get down to the 3micron and lower it's "better" to use a stropping motion with them. Just my experience though.

I am worried about cutting up the films... though it looks like people go up and down with the EP polishing tapes like Jdavis and ankerson. What does everyone else do?

Like $21.30 for all of them combined, 1" x 1/8" x 6" for the SIC Moldmasters.

120, 150, 240, 320, 400 and 600 if they got all of them.

I use the 320, 400 and 600 grits, that would be so that would be like $11.55 total for those 3 stones.

AND THEY LAST FOR A VERY LONG TIME.......

They cut very fast being SIC and it doesn't matter what steel it is either, I use the 320 for reprofiling and finish with the 400 usually.
I am considering the EP system and I noticed that EP refers to their stones as "water stones." Are the Congress silicone carbide stones also considered water stones?

I see this is a bit of an old thread, but to get back to the discussion of the 3M lapping film - is there any such material out there that is diamond and not silicon carbide?

3M has some diamond films, but finding them in small quantities is a chore.
