How many Hinderers is too many?

I'm about to get my first XM18 & I'm kinda pumped up. After 100+ pieces I've owned, this will be my first XM18 & already I'm looking at getting another. Why? Why not? They've got a pretty decent track run, seem to made pretty well & have a modular philosophy. What's not to like? Is this just another rabbit hole I'm about to fall in? Maybe. Will I have fun making this my own? Hopefully. My question is, can you make the Hinderer that you love or is it a never ending quest to make it perfect?

I don't know that you can make the perfect Hinderer (everyone's "perfect" is different) but to answer the thread title, there is no such thing as too many. You always need one more than you have at present.

I’ve owned many Hinderers, all XM series, 3” and 3.5” XM-18’s and the big ass XM-24. I’ve loved them all but I no longer own all of them. I’ve moved some along to make way for others. The 3” models were too small for my XL hands, the wharncliff would sometimes nick my hand (meaty part under the thumb) when opening. It had to go, although in a way, I still miss that knife. Another 3”, a spanto was solid, but still clipped my hand in the same spot.
The 3.5’s were excellent although I had one in S35VN that was so thick behind the edge that it would never sharpen, although I tried desperately for a LONG time. I moved it along. Similarly, for reasons, I miss that knife.
Anyway, I still have a few Hinderer’s and I love them dearly, 3.5” and the big ass XM-24. For me, the ergonomics are amongst the best knives that I’ve ever owned, and that’s a whole bunch.
So, to answer your question, if you love the knife as I do, there is no amount that becomes too many. Hinderer knives are simply amazing.
Lastly I will say this, I own Curtiss and Koenig knives along with many more, and love those as well. But I will always have at least a few Hinderers in my collection. And for the record, I carry all of my knives. If I don’t love it, it doesn’t get carried, and it gets moved along.
TLDR: they’re amazing. No such thing as too many. Keep the ones you love, move the ones you don’t.

Hinderer ... CRK ... Case or SAK ... brand doesn't matter it's only too many if you buy more than you can afford ... other than that it's subjective.

If you like being able to personalize a knife ... you will like having that option with the XM-18s ... with hardware and scales can take you up around $900.00 or over (depending on your tastes) total after personalizing one if you go with every option ... have fun.

And I have a handful of Hinderers ... I have a few that turned out just as I hoped with hardware/scales etc ... and they will probably never go anywhere they get carried pretty regularly. I also have some I am considering selling only because they ones I like the most get carried and just having several set around isn't making much sense as I get older.

Don't overlook the other Hinderer models. I started with XM's but really like the 1/2 track/full track, Eklipse and MP-1(not initially but it's grown on me). Only thing I really decided is I'm less a fan of the skinny models and appreciate the hand fillers. Next knife will be another but probably not an XM unless it's a non-flipper but I haven't seen those around for a while. Looking at maybe a Jurassic or a Firetac next, we'll see.

I'm leaning back on thumbstuds myself. I modded a SW Modus to TS & it's sooo much better. Of course it guillotines worse than a Shiro, but meh. Just gotta watch the fingers.

I've been really tempted to mod one of my XM's to a non-flipper but so far haven't had the guts, maybe if I get a user off of here I'll give it a go.

You can not have too many, this is Blade Forums

I've only been into the Hinderer game a short time, but now have 3 which are all different styles, sizes and models.

I am probably going to keep it at these 3 and move on to microtech next.

Man I'm really on the fence about buying my first hinderer xm-18. I love the look they have, so rugged but I keep watching youtube vids about the weak detent and lack of blade centering on such a pricey knife....one day maybe

Thanks for posting this, I thought this only happens to me ...

OP: yes, it is a rabbit hole .... just stock, across the different blade shapes, finishes, actions/generations, blade thicknesses, choil vs. no-choil, steel and customizations, there is an almost infinite number of variations that you can collect. And don't forget the Eklipse, it's a really great knife actually.

Might simplify it if you decide which blade shapes and finishes you like, and if you want to use or display. For example, I decided against Spantos, and mostly use stone-wash. I've used a couple of Ti scales, but in the end prefer the original G10 scales (don't scratch as easily).

But even if you just focus - say - on Bowies, there still is a large number of "different" ones :) And I'm sure there will be more this year ...

All the Bowies above are perfect, just different :)

Forget Youtube. They are very easy to center. And the detent on Gen 6 knives is almost too strong for my taste.
