How many HP for a buffer?

I have a tiny 1" blade I made for fun that is lost forever. I heard it hit two walls before disappearing into the fabric of space time.

Can you get by without using buffer at all?
Is felt belt loaded with compound a good substitute for a buffer?

I think that's one of those questions that takes two answers
yes you can do with out a buffer. a buffer is a tool that makes things easier
you can buff with a simple rag. if you go back to the lasts posts you'll see
what we all use buffers for ,,and used very little just to finish, you can do that same with a buffing rag with more work..

as far as a loaded felt belt I don't think you'll get as good a result at least as good as what I'd be looking for, you'll knock off your grind lines, that was said also, for a pro look you want sharp grind lines..I hope this helps..

i use a 1 1/2 hp 3450rpm. but i agree with most that when it comes to tools its all what the user is comfortable with.. as a rule if you are not comfortable dont do it. that applys to many tools besides grinders and buffers there is nothing in this world worth loosing your eye sight or being injured an object coming of a buffer comes with much more force than the wheel itself. be safe

I just picked up a Craftsman 1/5 HP, variable speed 1500 to 3450 RPM bench grinder today for $89 and replaced the stone and wire wheel with two 6" cotton buffs and it works great. If the buffs grab the blade you can control it, due to the low HP and the presence of a work rest and guard.
