So as I sit here pondering the 2015 releases and more specifically one I have my eye on, I begin to wonder how many Benchmades does one "need?". I don't have a ton of them, 6 or 8. I just know the models I like and pick up one or two as they come along. Maybe an LE version if available. My point is, I don't have a "need" for a new one and I spend quite a bit on the whole hunting, guns, fishing, boat, truck, etc. toys toys toys. But then I think, "what's one more?"
I may have a problem...

Yes, you have a problem. But many of us have the same affliction. For me at this writing I own 40 plus change. It's small compared to others but most are historical pieces mixed with a few good users.

...welcome to the club!;)

Everyone has their nitch or so to say, you have the knife bug, and so do pretty much everyone here, I myself have at least 20 benchmades and even more spydercos. Nothing to worry about man, the way I see it for myself is my son has a hell of a gift when he goes to college... by that time I'll only need a handful of knives anyway.

I think about it sometimes, obviously I don't need the amount of knives I have (I forget the count right now but its actually pretty modest compared to most on here). That being said the thing I like about knives is they can last you for a lifetime. I'm 27, so the idea that an item I purchase today could very well be as useful and reliable 20 years from now is an assurance you don't get with many other items. For that reason I don't mind "collecting" knives, worst case scenario I give away/sell the ones I don't use and make someone else happy.

Let me know when you start an Excel spreadsheet on your knives. It's a wonder I'm still married at all lol. As long as I keep the knives around $100 I can weather the storm, but top $200 and all hell breaks loose at my house. :)

He who dies with the most knives, wins :)
I'm not "in it to win it"; but, I don't mind buying myself a new knife to reward myself. The weird thing is that sometimes that itch comes right on the heels of other (large) expenses...sort of a reminder to take care of myself, too.

Actually, I have a list in Google Spreadsheets. Tracking purchases, what I gave away or sold....

That's an easy fix... When you buy a $300 knife, just break it down into three separate knives that are $100 each :D

How many is too many?

Why are you asking us? There has to be a practical point at which adding one more shiny new folder will cause your upstairs study to collapse into the basement, but the limits of that should be determined by a qualified structural engineer after careful study, not just random people on the internet. So if you think you are getting close to that, if you are hearing alarming noises from your beams and the floor is no longer as leveled as it once was, for Pete's sakes call someone before it's too late! Otherwise, take it easy, you are not there yet and you still have room for a few more knives.

Hadn't thought of that... now to figure out a way to hide it on the bank statement lol. Plus I need to work on my poker face when I get a new blade. The "Game Warden", as I sometimes refer to my lovely wife, gets suspicious if she sees me smiling. :p

That would be a point to consider.
I just wonder why I become compelled. I wouldn't compare it to an obsession. It comes and goes. But a nice, well crafted, aesthetically pleasing knife compels me to buy it. I am selective, but when I see one I want it usually happens.

The only honest answer is it is too many when you let it start impacting your finances; especially such that knives become priority over bills and family.

Beyond that, so long as you are meeting your obligations, there is never really too much. ;)

It's a problem if you're spending money you don't have, or are letting it negatively impact more important finances.

Other than that, unless you turn into a recluse hoarder I think you'll be OK.

I really do know when it actually would be "too much" as if I couldn't "support the habit" so to speak. Just wondering if others have reflected upon themselves and asked "how many do I need?"
I could afford to buy many more than I have if that's what I wanted to spend all my "fun money"'on, but I do other things as well.
It's just knives why do you need 10, 20, 100, etc.? I ask myself. I think it has become collecting even though I will use them. Damn Benchmade keeps making better models or improving current models with better materials. Just when I think I got what I like to have, they make a other good one or KW offers an exclusive that is kick-ass.
I do appreciate the feedback as I'm sure many here have either thought the same or avoided such thoughts; denial...lol.

...

That is easy; I need 1, but I want them all..... O.k., I would admit that I really wouldn't want any of the silly knives sold by Dark Ops or The Franklin Mint :D

I'm not sure there is such a thing as "too many", at least not where knives are concerned :D
If there is, I hope I Never find myself there..
