Just curious, How many kits do you guys keep stocked at any given time? Do you just keep a bob? Or a dayhike bag, and a bob, and an overnighter? Do you guys just move gear around to suit your given situation?

I keep a minimalistic get home kit in my vehicle, along with a jump bag which is a fully stocked EMS kit. At home I just move gear to whatever bag I am takin that day based on need.

I just have a huge pile of stuff. I mean I have a Gossman PSK, a space blanket, an extra flashlight in my truck but that's about as close to a kit as I have.

I need to add a fixed blade to my vehicle kit. I usually have a small fixed blade on me, along w/ a farmer, but I should put my 12 in tram in there too.

Last night I drove up to my buck pen after work and needed to fix this hay feeder I had rigged up out of some stock panels but had forgot to bring a knife. Luckily my wife got the PSK out of the truck and I was able to cut the rope and fix the feeder.

Do you guys keep a cheap blade in the vehicle, or a busse, or something along those lines? I have issues with keeping some of my more expensive fixed blades out in the truck.

Hollow- You FORGOT to bring a knife?!?!, 40 lashes with a wet noodle!

Yeah, that “pile of stuff” approach. I do get little clusters of stuff but that's usually because they have just happened to stay that way from the time I assembled them for a task. If I had kits made in advance I'd be ripping them apart to tailor them just before I went anyway.

I've got a bogus Golok thing tucked away. I despise it, and if someone stole it it would be a blessing. But it is kinda sharp [truly kinda – it is to sharp as crayon is to pencil], and I'd be unlikely to break it.

It's the thing I described as a “buckled plank” in this thread

NEVER ADMIT THAT HD! You may get a temporary ban from the forums:D

Actually, my wife chews me out if I don't have a knife on me...that helps me to remember as well:D

Really depends on the situation, but most often I do have a 12" Ontario machete, Mora and SAK. Nothing too expensive and as Fiddleback can attest, it's a hard balance of leaving a decent kit in you vehicle with the risk of theft...you want something you can rely on, but you can't get too attached if it's stolen.

Oops, forgot the actual post:o

I do have a few different kits (both my kids also have a small kit, more for dayhikes, but will work for short term emergencies as well; and my wife has a both a pack for weekend backpacking and an Osprey 35 for our day hikes nad rock climbing).

Deployment Ruck (Large HSGI Modified ALICE)
Backpacking pack (Arc'Teryx Tango or Kifaru EMR)
Day hiking/rock climbing bag (Osprey Kestral 38)
Hunting (for single-day hunting only - Camelback Ambush or Kifaru Scout)
Tuck Get-Home-Bag (Kifaru Scout or old USGI medium ALICE)

All have my "essentials" and then specific gear for the activity. I may switch a stove around or add a few extra clothes, but other than that, they are ready to go. I do have a few tuff-boxes with camping gear, backpacking food, medical supplies, etc. I'm not where I want to be with organization yet, but for the grab-and-go for a deployment, SHTF or quick weekend get-away camping trip, we're pretty set.

That's funny Rock. So a lot of times when we were on the farm I'd not have a knife. Then the wife would berate me "YOU don't have a knife!! How can you call yourself a FARMER if you don't have a knife on you"

So I got on the net to look for some decent knives.........

Now any time she complains about the knives laying all over every flat surface in the house the pile of khukuris over the fridge etc I tell her:

YOU STARTED IT!;)

I keep a kit in my truck toolbox. Good for about 72 hrs. Plus shovel, machette, axe, water, tent and tarp. I keep a small first aid & fire kit in my pocket with my edc knife. And I keep a loaded pack for day hikes.

Basic 72hr truck kit:

Mike, how do you store a 4 person 72 hr kit? Seems like it would be huge!

Rock- the theft thing is what I worry about. I might just put the 12in tram in there, or my trailhawk. JIC. I always have at least a sak farmer on me, and more times then not I have a small fixed as well.

Hollow- that a great story, how can she argue with that!!!
