How many knife purchases a year...

This year it will be only two handmade knifes. One I already have, the Hinderer XM18, and a Mini Rocklobster by Jens Anso is on order and will hopefully be finished in some weeks. Both are in my normal price range, about $400. I like to carry all my customs, perhaps You can´t call me a collector from this point of view. "Carryable" knifes are almost practical folders, so my price range won´t go up to much in the next years. Well, I hope so ;)
In fall, I always visti the IMA knife show in Munich, Germany. Who knows, perhaps I have an accident there and it will be three knives this year. I´ll keep You updated.

I've bought 11 pieces this year - 4 were orders and 7 were pieces that I picked up off the secondary market. I have one more show to go to, so I may pick up something there, but not really going to buy.

I tend to be opportunistic about what I buy, while I'll say I'd prefer to place orders - when something I like pops up for sale I'll grab it, if it's up my alley & priced to sell. I'll probably be a little more selective in the future though - as probably 2-3 of the aftermarket pieces I picked up I'll probably sell/trade in the future. A little too impulsive I guess.

In general the things I buy aftermarket tend to be perceived bargains. The average price of something I purchase aftermarket is 1/3 of the average price of a piece that I order.

I have 5 pieces on order for 2007, with the slight possibility of ordering one or two more.

Besides the Damascus Texas Toothpick slippie from the sale Don H. III, had for the widow of his friend/collector last November, I am Bowie's/Fighters,all the way. , forged as close to shape as possible.
Also managed to pick up Mr. Sunfishman's first Bowie. And first forged Bowie w/fine antelope horn handle at that Sale.
I got my first Don Fogg,Bailey Bradshaw,Craig Camerer,Sfreddo added two John Fitch's and two Jerome Anders in the last year.Oops, almost forgot the nice Jot Khalsa subhilt I got off Buddy.
Have 3 ordered now, will see two before end of year and third in Spring.
Edited to Add.Filicietti, got a Fillicietti coming. Ya,I know. He's the bad 'un! It was too nice,IMO,to let pass.
Apologies to anyone on the forum who may have been scorched by him.
It's my first European deal and it left Amsterdam 3 days ago,I guess a week or two.

WOW!
Aren't there some deals in the Sale forum NOW. :D
Second edit:Picked up another little Fitch fighter today from G2,done for this year. :D

I would say I spend about 1000 USD a year - which is about 2 custom folders. I will spend probably more this year :(... There are so many nice knives available now...

My custom knife purchases haven't changed that much. I keep telling myself, "Only X knives this year" or "You're restricted to spending a specific monetary amount." The spousal unit even has me on an annual knife purchase budget. None of it works ! :D So far this year, I've made 12 purchases (customs) and have four on order (with open delivery dates).

Thanks to my spouse, I was able to get 2 customs that I really wanted. And thanks to Tom Krein, I was able to get one of his amazing fixed blades. I have purchased a custom Ranger knife this year as well.

I have standing annual orders with some makers, (Osborne, Steigerwalt). I usually buy 20 knives a year from variuos sources including dealers, shows, eBay etc. I also sell and trade a bit, but tend to accumulate more than sell off. Mostly I've been collecting engraved folders and autos lately.

i have made as many as 14. last year 2. none so far this year. i have one knife on order.

I'm very new...although I have decades of lab training as an experimental physicist (optical and electronic properties, mostly).

Especially after reading this thread, I believe I'll 'hold' myself to 1 - 2 knives a year. But they'll be well researched, well thought out, and therefore very carefully chosen. Many will be commissioned.

That said, just saw an unbelievably attractive bowie by Dan Wilkins...and I wouldn't have to wait 12 - 24 months to get it.

Such temptation.

STOP!!

Consult with some fellow collectors before you take the plunge on a new custom knife if you are a newbie!

Otherwise, you pays your money, and you takes your chance.

Been a user/collector for years now. However this year I have only bought 3. Will be buying more soon (2-3) as my son and daughter will need a good knife.

Still got the knife that started it for me a Buck pen-knife. ( 102 ?)

I still buy more cameras than knifes but I buy more knifes than guns.

I've bought three so far this year. Two Doziers and one by Ken Brock. I hope Santa will bring me a fourth. Probably another Brock.

For me it's 2-3 knives per year, in general. It's limited by the budget. Sometimes I have to sell some knives from the collection to pay for new ones.

Classified information. ;) :D

Seriously, I don't care to even attempt to keep track. :)

Danbo,

Keith must be single. This sort of information, in the hands of a wife, could prove deadly!

Loose lips sink ships! :foot:
