How Many Knives Do Ya Really Need?

Harlow,
I never liked Algebra, I do like your equation.

Ed,
Ya wanna bet?

How many do I really need? I'll let you know when I get there. I'm glad I've got a big house and the kids are moving out.

42. Yeah, that's ALL. Just 42. I keep hearing about that number, and it sounds Good. I am going to stop when I have 42. Or maybe 43. No, wait a minute, I meant 42. That's the answer to the question. I CAN stop when I have 42. Really.

Anybody want 83 knives? I seem to have More than I want.

As I write this, I am scheming to maybe buy about four more knives before I give buying a rest (for a while). I keep reminding myself how few knives I actually used to get by with. As I said in the original post, there are few out of my many knives that I actually carry and use almost all the time...but even then, it often takes me longer to decide what knife to carry than what I'm gonna wear!

I must blame the many production co.'s like Spyderco, etc., as partly responsible for this addiction.

When I think I have everything I need out comes new models, or worse yet, improvements to old favorites.
At least I'm figuring out which I'll be using regularly.

Oh, BTW, nice to see you back, Bartman!!!

To make my jeans fit comfortably - 2; to make
my breifcase balance correctly - 2 more; to
make me feel good - as many as I can get!

"Just a few more......."

Picking the cloths that I'm going to wear takes about three minutes. Picking the bladeware for the day takes a half hour, if I'm lucky....

how many do i need? you see, it's an addition really and every time i get another, my tolerance goes up, so i need more. i can justify and say i NEED every one i have. how you ask? every knife is perfect for a small task, so i just find a lot of small tasks to perform

I guess when I'm ready to pass on to that big forge in the sky and am counting all my knives after a lifetime of amassing and collecting I will look at whoever is standing by my bed and ask them to lean down so they can hear me say "I still don't own a goddamn Moran"

I know there's a limit - there must be!

The foundation in the old place can only take on so many before a sinkhole swallows the whole building. I'll just add a few more... and keep a close eye on my foundation.

I figure I only really "need" two knives... a good pocket knife and a good fixed blade hunting/camping knife. On the other hand, I'm trying to see just how many I can afford.

Hmmmm, I am thinking I only need...."1".....for each pocket on each piece of clothing I have or will ever get.
Now that's not too much to ask is it?

I have to say it, only because I haven't seen it yet....

"There's more than one way to skin a cat, and more than one knife you can skin it with!!!"

As for a sheer weight limit, I shipped almost 50 pounds of knives back from Saudi Arabia when I returned from that "hardship" tour...(don't hurt yourself laughing on that one)

Easiest way to get away with buying (or acquiring) more knives.....get the wife interested!!!

if you want a knife you can use daily, go to a custom maker and ask for a knife with micarta handles and a d-2 blade, somewhere in the 59-60rc range. i think some where in the 8-9" overall lenght range would be perfect for most chores. i just finshed one like that, 8" overall for my neighbor, i'm holding on to it, until' i get the 10" utility knife finished, also for him.

I need 6.

3 for the kitchen - 8" chef, and 4" & 8" utility.
1 large Buck folder (1972 purchase)in the toolchest.
For camping I use the Buck, and as a utility fixed blade I carry a 6" Mora given to me by a Swedish Scout who stayed at our house for a couple days before he headed west to attend the 1967 Boy Scout World Jamboree.
1 Swiss Army, with scissors of course, for around the house needs.

Now how many I want is another question entirely. In a novel I enjoyed the "hero" in replying to a question about a collection replied - "You can never have too many guns." Sounds reasonable, if you know what I mean. :-)

To be honest, I've gone by a few years with a simple small folder. It's only odd circumstances that increase my collection.

1) Possibly losing the blade due to legality or some accident which makes me want two
2) Airport legality
3) A situation where the material is thick and requires a 1/4" thick or so blade.
4) Experiencing cutting/durability of various steels and workmanship of each piece.

Guys, my wife found thisoin an e-mail the other day. It has become my new sig line
