My wife is always asking this. I always say:

"I only buy the absolute minimum amount of knives needed to sustain my happiness. That number just hasnt been found yet! "

I have one Strider GB, and *need* an SnG badly to stay happy!

But the list of needs is ever growing. Oh poor me! :p

What of your happiness knife realated? Gettin' any? :D

i can relate. my girlfriend doesn't understand why i'll pay hundreds of dollars for a knife that i rarely, never, or always use. yet she wants a new coach purse ( i've bought her three already ) for each day of the week it seems. i have only bought three knives since Aug when i joined BFC so i think i'm doing alright controlling this urge to purchase sharp metal.

Need? I would venture a number between 200 and infinity. Obtaining 200 would start one on the road to something less than an infinite number. :)

Want? The answer is of course an infinite number and likely not obtainable in this world as we know it. ;)

Technology and designs are always evolving. I thought I had it all when I bought my first Sebenza. Then I saw a Shadow III, Spyderco Manix, Kershaw Leek, etc. I wish I could go with automatic knives. I am also in to flashlights. I just ordered an CR2 Ion and saw a few others that piqued my interest. Oh, woe is me...

The very fact that your wife is asking you such a question indicates that you might need to replace here.

Maybe a "Stepford Knife Wife"?

Good luck,
Allen.:D

I NEED 1 knife, maybe 2. That would be a fixed blade and a folder. If pushed, I may need a couple extra, for specific tasks. Want is another matter. I see few knifes that I don't 'want'.

Needs would be met with a SAK Camper, 3.5 inch blade Puukko and something that can chop.

The reasons I buy outside of my needs are mostly for experience / experimentation. I like playing around with different scales, lock-types, blade steels, griands, edge angles, handle sizes, tip styles and so forth. By using a wide range of knives I gain more knowledge as to how I can use each style effectively, while understanding the drawbacks they inheritly will have. For example, I strongly prefer a lockback to framelock because the former is easier to operate, though a drawback of this locktype is open-backed designs are not very possible.

However, my go-to knives are still my SAK(s) and Puukko.
