How Many Knives In Your Collection?

My situation is unique. 70 yr old disabled veteran (PTSD), no spouse/partner, mortgage is paid as is the car and truck. I concede that part of the PTSD is that I tend to "accumulate" stuff: Harley Davidsons, bicycles, tents, archery gear, fly fishing equipment, firearms . . . and knives.

My oldest knife is an off-brand Italian frame lock spear-point, from about 1959. Living in Oregon, I am partial to locally mfg'd items -- Kershaw, Gerber, CRKT, Buck. I have a Case Trapper with carbon blades, from back when carbon blades were standard. I have USA made Camillus Air Force Pilot Knife, a Camillus slip joint with stainless scales that is a USMC prototype (USMC didn't pick up the contract).

Several Schrade items from when Schrade, Old Timer, and Uncle Henry were made in the USA.
Cold Steel (one a replicaa 1860 Heavy Calvary Sabre), Boker, Hen & Rooster, K-Bar, Benchmade Bali Song . . .

I don't carry these knives. They're all "new in box," never sharpened and spread across the carpet in a corner upstairs.

I suppose the kitchen knives are part of the collection: Dexter Russel, Case, Forschner, Sabbatier, Farber.

I've never stopped to count, but I know there are easily more than 100 items. I just a couple weeks ago purchased a Case Doctor knife with spatula and bone scales, along with an Uncle Henry D2 steel Hunter with stag grip. I'm waiting for SMKW to send me a newsletter subscription confirmation with a 10% discount on my next purchase -- which is sitting in my "cart" on their page.

Several people tell me that knives are "guy jewelry" -- I suppose they have a point. In any event, I've slowed down on the acquisitions, but I don't intend to stop.

I'm sure I'm not alone. What is in your collection?

I don't really have a collection; more of an accumulation. Many are unused and never sharpened. They are unused mostly because I never needed to use them rather than any decision to keep them as-new.

I like Bob Dozier fixed blades, GEC slip joints, Blackjack Classic fixed blades, Vic SAKs, and a couple Randall's. Used to buy a fair amount of SOG stuff between 2005 and 2010. My interest has faded with them.

I generally don't spend more than $200 on a folder. Don't have a limit on fixed blades, but for the most part they all fall in the sub-$350 area. Some values are currently higher than that.

I like to try out other manufacturer's stuff from time to time and as a result have a lot of singles from different manufacturers.

I'll see how this thread develops, but I have over 100 different knives or blades.

Link removed, take the time to read the site rules please.

One of a kind and "out of stock" -- Otherwise it would be the Randall I don't own, yet.

Sounds like a nice collection!

Mine skews heavily towards "modern" knives -- my first view of a Spyderco was the catalyst that changed me from "knife user" to "knife maniac." However, I do have some nice older knives from the period of my youth and some new-build traditional patterns from Buck, Case, GEC / Tidioute, Gerber (circa 1980s), Manly, and Pacific Cutlery (pre-Benchmade).

Hi X Xero Xero and welcome to Bladeforums.

I have 30-ish knives in my collection. The majority are modern folders acquired over the last 3 years, but I still have knives from when I was a kid. I have the Buck 110 my dad gave me when I was 12; I just put a crazy sharp edge on it, as a matter of fact. There’s a chance one of the Victoronox knives shashed here & there might even be the one I carried as Boy Scout too.

There’s a thread located here where a bunch of us have shown pictures of our collections. I like reading about (and seeing) what other folks collect too, even when my tastes might be different.

My collecting (acquiring) has tapered off a lot lately. There’s a few reasons for that. First, I’m pretty content with what I have. Second, most of what I want is pricey (my tastes have gone upscale). And third, I’ve recently rekindled a few old competing hobbies.

Welkom to bladeforums.

My situation is quite different to yours.

I'm 23, just getting started with adult life i guess.
My girfriend and i started renting a house about 1 year ago, and we both work full time.

I have 19 knives, of which 3 multitools, 2 opinel knives, 6 Swiss Army Knives and 8 modern folders from ZT, Kizer, WE, and Spyderco.

I have just over 100 in my collection, mostly fixed blades, and mostly from the 80's and 90's, with some newer stuff too. Something like 60% is Cold Steel, with healthy doses of Blackjack/Ek, Gerber, and others.

Sounds like you need some Ontario Old Hickory.

My accumulation in around the 75 piece mark. Kitchen is Dexter-Russell, Henkles, Old Hickory. Folders lean towards Spyderco and Case. Fixed are all over the place with a handful of H.I. Khukuris. Now that I’ve got a solid base covered I’m trying to concentrate on upgrading rather than building numbers. I have found the search is as rewarding as the acquisition. Sounds like your strategy has gotten you this far, I say keep on rolling.

I've got about 30 or so? Mainly folders with I think 5 fixed blades? I was up to about 50 at one point and I've probably bought and sold 250 plus? Over the last 6 months, I have really begun to sell off knives that don't get carried. I have focused on using that money to buy fewer higher quality knives. I would maybe like to get down to about 20 folders that consists of generally higher quality knives that I know I will carry. I don't buy Safe Queens anymore. I bought a few over the years and ended up selling them.

Too many, by far... I wish I could got back in time to stop myself on many of them..

I have 504 folding knives. That's about 503 more than I need and hundreds fewer than I want.
I/we (spouse included) have around 40-50 fixed blades including swords, spears and axes. About half are real and half are decorative.
Oddly, when it comes to kitchen knives, all of mine are crap.

I probably have an accumulation of a few hundred knives. Mostly fixed blades and nothing really fancy or expensive except for two customs that my brother gave me. I do have a few nice things, like a Fallkniven F1 (about $80 new recently), a Puma stag-handled Bowie I got new as a teenager back in the early 1970's, an EK bowie (Richmond) from the 80's. A few older Boker knives. But mostly thin machetes and thick Thai and hill tribe hand-forged choppers. Lately I've picked up a bunch of Moras because they are functional and cheap as chips. I give them away. The central-south American machetes averaged about $5 each delivered. Thai stuff maybe $3-$5 each, but that was awhile back (I'm 65).

I really need to round them all up and do an inventory. I did do a rough count of my hammer accumulation not long ago. Maybe 60, but I still find one or two under the couch or in a drawer. Mostly cheaper than knives and you don't have to sharpen the damned things.

One of several boxes I imported 15 years or so ago:

Free to $5 (the really pointy one) from my personal collection. The incurved one next to the rattan sheath was a gift from my 70 year old blacksmith friend. First one in the pic on the left was about $2., though it did include the custom drainpipe plastic sheath. Quite thick, nice octagonal (unfinished) hardwood handle.

LOL! I love the last sentence. For some reason that is very funny.

Maybe 25 to 30, counting fixed blades. And then another 9 swords, and 3 others that count as short swords.
