How many knives is too many at once?

6 or so?

I usually carry 5 or 6........ 4 traditional slip joints, and a one handed folder.

This does change when I add a gun and small flashlight. Then the number drops to 3 or maybe 4.

Do you take your knives off when you go to Chicago or do you try to pretty much just try to stay out of it as much as possible?

I avoid the city as much as possible, but sometimes I drive through the area to get to different job sites. That said, I've driven through Chicago with a 4" folder before:D

It's pretty rare when I'm deep into Chicago though. That's better for me, the entire city is a pit...
I prefer to head an hour or five north deep into Wisconsin, nothing but nothingness:thumbup: and cheese...

I carry more than I realize sometimes. I have a SAK Rally on my keychain (bottle opener + 2 kinds of screwdrivers is quite handy) along with a Fenix E05 flashlight, usually a 3.5" or smaller frame traditional in the watch pocket and a modern folder in another pocket. So I almost always have at least 3. Never feels uncomfortable. If I'm going out I'll ditch the modern folder and choose a small slipjoint for the watch pocket.

Does anybody have a good boot knife? If you do how does it feel? I have been looking in to getting one, but a. they are kind of hard to find at a reasonable quality b. I don't know how well they will ride in my boot. I ask because that is the only real-estate that I have left to put a knife and I have always found the subject of a boot knife very appealing for some reason.

Yeah if campus police knew I had five knives on me they would probably freak out, but hey what they do not know will not hurt them. Could a world wise person such as yourself please explain to me where such arbitrary numbers like two inches come from? I am just a simple country guy and do not understand the regulation of tools that a person can carry.
Because of people like you campus police needs armored vehicles these days. ;)
Nah of course not. Kind of weird how times are more restrictive for blades and about everything on campus but the campus police wants to have more and more martial equipment.

Yeah the difference between here and where I grew up seriously gave me culture shock for the first few weeks. I went from a place where knives are tools, a lot of people in my high school had knives on them in class and not much was said unless it got pointed out, to a place where knives are weapons and evil things almost like how people perceive guns. Oh well I guess it was all in how you were raised. I got my first knife when I was six so I have it engrained into my brain that knives are tools, and in my opinion one of the most versatile tools that have ever been invented. I do realize though that growing up in the suburbs and in the city though a lot of people simply do not need a knife in everyday life, so the kids of people who never use a knife never get exposed the pure awesomeness that occurs when you attach a couple pieces of wood to a sharp piece of metal.

I've found I can get by with a stout locking folder and a SAK Farmer for the tools-------a lot of times the SAK gets left behind just cause I don't like all the weight.

Ok... I readily admit I probably carry too many. Why? Well... WHY Not!!! M H O.

Have 4 to 5 most days and then the .45 and light and stuff.

example from yesterday.

IMHO anything over 2 knives at one time is just ridiculous. I cant think of any situation where you would ever need 5 knives at once. "having the right tool for the job" is what you said. What does the your spyderco or leek do that your Sebenza cant?

One or maybe two knives would be enough weight for me to carry in a fanny pack - front zipper all alone, in a pocket alone and/or in a purse.

One knife would do the job for me 99% of the time.

I think that it is an individual decision. For me it depends on where I am going and if I am going camping or hiking in the woods/wilderness. Hiking or camping - two knives would do the job. We do not sleep in a tent in grizzly country. We sleep in a new work van - only two bucket seats up front and we sleep in the back. We do not use the work van for 'work' and we like our own simple set up since we go to off the beaten track places. Sometimes we use my husband's pick up truck too. It depends on the trip.

My spyderco is a much tougher blade it is the knife that if I have to push a knife to the limit it will be that knife it is a tank if you have never held a gayle Bradley folder I highly suggest that you do so. The leek you are right my sebenza can do everything that it does however the leek is my public folder. It is a knife that people are more likely to have seen and if they haven't even at a glance it is a pretty nonthreatening knife and if somebody does get all huffy about my knife I didn't just put a $400 knife in peril. However the aforementioned reasons probably will not change your opinion so I will just say that we disagree, which is perfectly fine with me. Just know that I am not carrying 5 knives simply because I can I seriously think that I have a good all around system each knife has its own purpose and reason for taking up space in my pocket.

I'll admit to typically carrying around (at least) two knives -

Always an Emerson and typically an accompanying slicer like my Small Sebbie 21, Spydie Caly 3, Rat II or SAK variant. That said, I have recently, taken to wearing my Sebbie in a leather pouch on my belt so I fairly regularly find myself carrying three...

...Then I picked up a nice Murray Carter neck knife and sometimes I sling that thing over my head, and under my shirt, at the start of the day. ;)

Found that situation yesterday. Had four knives which I know is overkill but sometimes it just happens :).

The Sebbie and neck knife -

I also always carry a small flashlight, typically Eagletac DA25.

Who cares if it makes us happy? If one works for you, knock yourself out. Two is my typical minimum and if anyone thinks that's unnecessary/nuts/overkill - I just don't care ;)

Cheers,

Ben

PS:

My MT husband carries his favorite, old pocket knife AND a Leatherman multi tool kit on his leather belt or a Swiss Army knife.

So he basically carries two knives.

My late husband carried one and sometimes two knives. Most of the time - it was one knife and he always had the other ONE in his truck/car or close to him.

Typos!

I just carry two. My primary, clipped to my pocket, and the little blade on my Leatherman Squirt on my keys. I'll use my Squirt for the dirty and abrasive jobs. I don't want gum up my Para II with glue or scratch it up opening a bag of gravel.

Sounds like Montana men have their knife needs square away - and you certainly do!

Nice work! ;)

Only one knife. Sometimes a leatherman too. But I always have my bag within close proximity and I've got everything in there. Sometimes I see "pocket dumps" here and can't imagine how someone could carry all that on there person and still walk!

Mike

I've carried 4. I typically carry between 2 and 3.

Folder, fixed blade, neck knife.

When I go to the woods, swap the neck knife for a larger fixed blade.

I carry 7 backpacking, if u count the hatchet and machete. But my favorite is the esse 5

I only carry two, a Mini Grip, and a SAK Tinker, or a slipjoint on the weekends. But like many have said, it all depends on what you can justify, or feel the need/want for. I would love to carry more, I just don't have enough real estate in my pockets for more.
