How many non-HI khukuris do you have?

Any good workers in the bunch or just a bunch of turkeys? Every once in a while I see a non-HI khuk that temps me. You know, for digging out stubborn weeds and such. The dirty grunt jobs. Any experiences or observations?

Frank

If it doesn't have to hold an edge, anything should work.

If it's comfortable to use.

I own a Atlanta Cutlery "Assam Rifles" khuk. It was my first. I have had it since the late eighties IIRC. I bought a Blackjack/Reinhart in the early nineties. I bought 4 Ghurka House khuks also before finding HI. I have 14 HI khuks IIRC with more planned!;)
I have to say that my HI khuks are the best of all of them, BUT some of those others are no slouches! Even the AC khuk which took hours of work to get the finish up and to get nice and sharp is a pretty good chopper in a light way. It is 1/4 inch thick and 13 or 14 inches long. It has a mid 50s rockwell at the edge so it is not a super edge holder. All in all though, for the 20 something dollars I bought it for back then it has been fine. It kept my Khukuri fires fanned until I could find real Nepalese khuks.
All of my old GH khuks have a nice convex edge design. They are not as refined as HI but are real Nepalese made good functional khuks.
The way I look at it,the khuk has been around in one form or another for thousands of years:eek: There are bound to be other places where they are made that are neat to check-out also. I will always dwell here though and get most of my khuks here, as I have found HI is not just about great khuks, it is a great place for kindred spirits to share life and khuks. My second home, so to speak. Sometimes you can find a bargain khuk that is older than you and I are combined at a flea market IF you are lucky! I hope we are all that lucky once and a while!!

I have an AC khuk with the riveted wood handle. It is identical in length and weight to my Bura-made WWII, but appears to be cut out on a bandsaw rather than forged. Even so, this is the one I use when there is deliberate work to be done in the dirt/soil, and when it is sharpened up it cuts fairly well. I just can't see using that convexed, leather-stropped Bura blade on something likely to chip or ding it (such as rocks/dirt).

I have a really cheap Indian made khuk. It has a tiny brass handle, with spots of paint for highlights, an offcentre and thoroughly useless blade, and a synthethic velvet covered scabbard with plastic beads to resemble jewels or pearls. I only kept it because it was so awful, ironic isn't it?

I have a Cold Steel "Ghurka" Khuk that I haven't gotten rid of yet. It would make a decent fighter, given how light it is, but its chopping ability is not great. Penetrates well, but it sticks every time.

I have two - an Indian model made of soft steel that will not hold an edge, and a really ugly villager I got from Uncle Bill that gets used extensively in the garden.

Edited to add: Forgot about one, a Dhankuta-style mini Hanuman that I also got from Uncle Bill. This is a very nice little villager, I guess I've come to think of it as an H.I. even though it's not.

Two from AC, one very sturdy AK type out of junk shop, one VERY SPECIAL folding khukuri, one special oldy from JP with replaced wooden handle, one Newari tourist junk got thru UB, guess that makes six

lcs37 - you have a folding khuk too?

I must get one sometime...I have lusted over Bill's far too long now...

I have 3 or so Cold Steel Gurkee Kurkees. Got em' all before I wound up here. Anyone wanna trade for one? :)

ChairWoman of the Board uses two Villagers I've had a long time for digging, weeding, & etc. She beats the crap out of them on a regular basis. I know what I have to do when I come in from work & find one or both laying in the middle of the kitchen table........get the edge back on them before bedtime. Those two knives get a work out, & other than scrathes & dings, just keep ticking.....handle on one got loose a year or two ago & I epoxied it, & cut the sharp edges down at the back of the handle. It has never loosened since. It is still unbelievable, at times, how much use & abuse these khukuris will take. I don't think she even bothers to use these little hand-held flower & garden tools anymore.....just grab one of those khukuris.

I still have one ranger boot left, Bruise. I can't find a thing wrong with it, but Sharon says it's a blem, so it's up for trade. Call or email. :D

I'd say it's a blem. No laces. :)

And it's full of holes. :barf:

Hey! On closer examination of the picture
it's clear that this footwear has been
fitted to a foot and worn.
Officially a blem must be a new item.
This is used.

In any case, such an item is better suited for blade testing.

Hang it up/down from a limb and
see if you can cut through it in one slice.

Has everyone gone crazy around here?

Ooops, this is the HI forum. It just marches to the drummer of the day. Question withdrawn. See what happens when I ger enough sleep, whatever that is?
