How many of us have taken a survival course?

I was just curious as to who has taken any survival training course? What school, organization or instructor? What did you learn?

I have taken about 5 or 6 classes from Christopher Nyerges. Mostly just day trips, one overnighter. Main things learned were useful and edible plants, firebuilding skills all the way from a ferro rod to bow and hand drill firemaking, shelter building, finding water, throwing sticks and quick bows. He touches on so many things, it's hard to remember everything though.

Christopher is such a knowledgeble and friendly teacher. And he knows the mountains here like the back of his hand.

Other instructors I'd like to learn from are Cody Lundin, hope to make it to one of his courses in Arizona one day. And if they were still teaching classes, Ron and Karen Hood.

i have never taken a course before....:o i wouldn't mind checking out christopher nyerges courses one of these days...

Here in California, he is the guy, you'd love it Mike. You meet such a diverse group of folks in his classes too.

None, haven't really looked into it but would like to someday when my schedule and checkbook allow.

Unfortunately, I haven't got the chance too yet, but I would love to once I get the time and money.

I took weekend survival course and several 1 day workshop courses with John Mcaan from survival resources.... Great guy, good times, and as a side next month I'm going to get my wilderness first aid instructor certification.

A different kind of course, but I took wilderness advanced first aid at my university campus this year. A really worthwhile course that beat the living pants out of basic first aid and CPR training.

Nahh....I have been running around the woods like a wild man since I was knee high to a grasshopper...I don't need no teacher to teach me nuthin. I don't see a need, all the info is available in reference. Study and Train...thats what your teacher did. OH, and I don't really feel comfortable in large groups in the woods anyways...seems weird.

That's great RR! I'm still trying to find a place around my neck of the woods that offers a wilderness first aid course. I don't know if it's backwards or not, but I'd like to get the first aid portion done before taking an actual survival course. -Matt-

I started out with the Wilderness Survival Merit Badge in Boy Scouts. Then in the Marines I took a desert survival class. Since joining the SAR commmunity I get to take a annual refresher with field portion every year. We usually get to use on of the Air Force SERE instructers and/or our own certified instructor. Last year I took a speciallized Aircrew Survival course throught WSDOT. Two days of classroom followed by two nights in the field. The instructor for that course was Ralph Wilfong of Emergency Management Specialists.

I've taken courses with a few schools in the Northeast but the one I learned the most from is the Wilderness Learning Center. This is after years of self study and under my father through childhood and into the present day.

I'm honored to work as an instructor there now with Marty, Aggie, Bobby and George. They are amazing people with a wealth of knowledge. I'm humbled to be in their company.

Kevin, I'm told you're such a natural and so skilled that your nickname is, "Perfect Kevin." :)

Looking forward to being your student when we get together.

Oh jeez! I can't believe I just read that! That nickname was from the first course I took with Marty. I had experience at the time with some skills and demonstrating them was very familiar and easy for me. There was another student there, a good friend of mine now, who joked he couldn't be "perfect" and he should be known as "imperfect." To this day, Marty still ribs me with that nickname. Thanks Brian! Now I get it from you too! Damn!

On a serious note, I think calling yourself "perfect" is a recipe for disaster. Even though I'm an Instructor now I still believe I am a student for life and I'm willing to learn from anyone willing to teach me. One can always learn more and everytime I go out into the woods, I come back with more experience and knowledge.

I like to say, you practice survival, you don't perfect it.

Marty has raved about you as a person, and your skills, on the phone many times over to me. I really am looking forward to being your student. I meant that! :)

Many thanks then Brian for all the compliments. I'm sure we can both learn from eachother's experiences and skills. Marty is a great guy as well. Talk about a walking encyclopedia of knowledge, a straight shooter (literally and figuratively) and someone who would bend over backwards to help the person next to him or anyone. I can't say enough good things about the people (staff and students) from the school.

I had a Survival/Winter Survival Course back at Fort Drum many years ago! Not bad but could have been better.
