How Many of You Cats Use a Strop? Let's See 'Em...

Where are you guys getting your strop compound? Does everyone buy online or is there some local source of which I'm not aware?

Beckerhead #42

I picked some up yesterday from Sears, but it was called Buffing Wheel Compound, and was near the dremel stuff. I guess there were grinders and stuff there too, but I really didn't pay much attention after I found what I was after.

I go to Amazon.com and buy Green Compound Oxide for $8. I use my strop daily on my edc blade and any others I use that day. I even pack the strop and compound with me on trips. At times, I'll also take a sheet of 1000 grit sand paper too.

finally found some buffing compound
#3 and #4 the first is a cleaning compound and the second is a polishing compound....will go back later for the #5 which is supposed to be mirror polish

got all the stuff i need, and will get them ready the next day or two and will post pics

here we go, first i bought an old 100% leather belt at a good will store. It was about 30 inches, but i didnt want to mess with the belt holes (and taking some advice from derek) i cut the belt into three 8 inch strips

then i found a wooden yard stake, it was cheap and it was the exact same width as the belt (1 1/2 inches) so i took a little hobby saw and sawed it into 8 inch wooden blocks

then i took some gorilla glue and glued the leather strips to the wooden blocks

so here are the pictures i promised

i still want to get the mirror polish compound (thats why i have 3rd strop for when i can go back and get it)
i cannot get my becker to shave arm hair (yet) but i can see a very noticable improvement in how sharp it is

i also notice that the strop is wearing the patina off...but it suppose thats to be expected
