i was just wondering how many use a can opener?
if i have cook beans i will, but for juices i just get my knife and pop acouple of holes on top and bam ready to drink( in a glass).

if i have a double knot tied on my shoes i just cut it. i buy plenty of shoe laces. :D my be i am crazy!!!

what other house hold items are replaced with the knife?

do you guys have aletter opener or do you use a knife? :D

i've got a manual can opener now, but for years I used my Swiss Army Knife to open cans, and still do sometimes. For untying knotted laces, I would never cut them. Use the awl or the hook (if you have one) on SAK. Every knife isn't a pure stabber. Tool kits aren't cheating. :)

Fast, easy and task specific, works very well. In the field, I use my P-38 miitary opener from the Nam era. Works great too. The only time I use a knife on a can is if I don't have either or for punching holes to pour condensed milk from it's can.

Yeah, I got a manual can opener in the kitchen. My Victorinox SAKs that I carry all have can openers, but I like to go with the best tool for the job. If I'm away from home, the SAK will come in handy. Funny I've rarely used my SAK for that function.

When I lived in Guatemala, the can opener was the tool that I used most on my Leatherman PST. It opened enough cans of tuna to fill a dump truck and popped the top off of more than a few beers. Now I use a dedicated can opener, a Swiss made Kuhn Rikon that opens cans without leaving any sharp edges.

i have try several can openers over those 20 years( Leatherman/Vic/Wenger/custom kindda SAK etc) but i prefer the one of SAK vic ones... simply find it more "handdy" and effective..

have you ever done same test?
you take all your multitools/SAK and decided to test the can opener over a big salad preparation?
I have done it and SAK classic was the best ! :D

You're not a real knut until you've opened a can with your knife because there's no can opener around. Works pretty well if you have a fairly stout blade.

I've never opened a can with a knife blade, but I've used my SAK for many over the years. When I lived alone, I always used it because it was easier than finding the manual opener and a lot easier to keep clean.

yup, the can opener on the SAK does it for me....

and if I cant open my knotted laces with my fingers, well, the awl on the SAK is useful.

And the screwdrivers and scissors...

oh wait, this isn't about SAKs?

:D

I guess that I've used knife blades as all of the above and more when it was needed. but I didn't feel great about it.

I always use the SAK can opener to open me and my roomates cans. I also use my small blade on my SAK as a dead cutical cutter...All i know is that everything on my SAK gets utilized especially those screwdrivers that are always their at the right time.

Can opener? Salad? What goes into salad besides fresh vegetables? :p

When I was a kid, I took my mom's can of sweet corn niblets to my room because I wanted to eat them before dinner time. My mom was working in the kitchen so I couldn't go to the drawer beside her and take the can opener to my room. Besides, she'd wonder what I was doing with that thing and where I was going with it.

The only option I had was to take my Buck folder and open the can. I had never done this but I learned quick. Set the knife at the top of the lid and hit it with the palm of the other hand. Move the knive over a bit and repeat till the can was opened with it's jagged edge. Any little bit of metal uncut, I'd pry open with the knife.

I ate the whole can of corn and mom wondered why I wasn't hungry that night.

I think I tried opening a can once with a blade. I'm a gadget guy though and I believe in the right tool for the job and using the best tool I can. That's why I carry a knife, because it's quick and easy when I need to cut something. I'm not going to then turn around and try and open a can like some GI in a foreign land, I'm going to open my gadget drawer in the kitchen and grab my nice big can opener, with a nice big crank for maximum torque. I'll then open the can in seconds. Also with the type of fine edge I keep on my EDC's I wouldn't want to risk chipping or dulling them by punching holes in some can when I have proper tools for doing that in my kitchen, where I would normally open a can.

If I was out in the woods or in a survival situation there's a good chance I'd have one of my SAK's on me with a can opener, bottle opener, etc. I wouldn't want to chance screwing up my knife blade on a can if I were to need it for something a knife is actually designed for.

what is this SAK's everybody is talking about? i think i need one if i have never heard of it. can someone point me in the right direction?

Err...ya know theres a tiny piece of stamped metal worth 50 cents called a P38 for such purposes

A good knife should be able to open an ordinary can easily without any damage. Sometimes I use a manual can opener, but when I'm lazy, I use my knife for this task without hesitation.
