How many of you practice good knife "hygiene"

How often do you clean your edc blade?

  • More than once a day regardless of use

  • At least once a day regardless of use

  • Only after it gets obviously dirty

  • Only after I have noticed it's been dirty for a while

  • It's gotta be a filthy mess before I even consider it

  • I think wiping it down with oil once in a while is good enough

  • Can't remember last time I did

🤣 It's only necessary if you live in something like a cave or dungeon used to age cheese, otherwise regular knife /gun oil is definitely preferable

it was mentioned by elementalbreakdown that he believed a handful of us use it on our knives.....so I've been continuing the joke......
Ah, gotcha.

Nah, don’t use that shit. Mineral oil for food safe, oil of your choice if it doesn’t cut food. Mineral oil’s super cheap. Pivot oil might as well be snake oil😜but we all have our favorites.

nope. I don't even oil pivots unless the knife gets wet or really needs it.

then I use whatever I got...bertolli or Pompeii......

do ya age whine in the cheese cave too?
I try to but it keeps getting moldy(I was referring to the whine, not the terlet) course it might be because my supplier is always sending those sour grapes

My answer is not among the selections. "Whenever I feel it needs it". Which is sometimes right after a cut, and sometimes not for weeks until right before a food cut.

Also, mineral oil does all my knife oil jobs.

Good trick for that is Tilex Mold and Mildew
Of course I bleached, changed the wax ring, and last time the plumber was over for stuff I can't do with soldering asked wtf the deal is and the answer was that it's not active mold but due to it being a basement toilet right next to the garage, in about a week the actual oil/dust from garage and single week of mildew creates permanent discoloration immediately that no amount of bleach or chemical will fix.

It's unsightly but not dirty. Believe me, I wouldn't be OK with it if it was actually unsanitary. I suppose I could paint it with the same Kilz white paint I use to prevent mold and Mildew, but tbh as long as it's sanitary, don't care.

Generally speaking, the things I cut with my pocketknives are dry items. As a result, it really doesn’t get dirty enough for a good cleaning very often. Just a quick dry-wipe of the blade is all that I usually need to do.

Packing tape goo is a whole different story. I clean that stuff off as soon as humanly possible with an alcohol based adhesive remover called Goof Off.
Get some frog lube that stuff takes it right off and oils your blade at the same time.

Frog lube is ok, the fact it's literally almost 100% coconut oil has been brought up here a few times but I think that a lot of the lubes are vegetable oils with scent and nothing else that adds to their usefulness or effectiveness.
Mineral oil is just as good.
I personally don't care what oil I use on knives because for the tiny amount needed, the needle point container you put it in is probably a hundred times more important than the oil itself.

For guns on the other hand, G96 and nothing else ever.
But only because the smell reminds me of deer camp as a kid : )

Absolutely awesome for the daily strop, agreed. This thread definitely helped me understand why I keep my knife really clean, been paying extra close attention last few days for number of things that a "dirty" knife would mess up, but I can get away with using a relatively clean knife.
The horticulture and mushroom stuff especially.

Also when I steal people's kidneys, I feel a little better knowing when they wake up in the hotel ice bath, there's less chance of infection.

But seriously, appreciate the responses.
