How many of you

I got that thunderbird insert for my zippos and it is really inconsistent? Do you have the same problem? I've heard some do and some don't.

Hi Tim,

I did have problems with the Thunderbird insert at first until I learned that the problem stemmed from the fact that I was not refilling it correctly. You have to follow certain steps in the refill exactly, or it will not perform optimally. It's not as simple as just sticking the butane can into the lighter and holding it there. Here is a video which shows you the steps in pretty good detail:

Another thing that helps performance is if you dial the flame bigger and go with a larger flame (two inches high or so). That gives you almost-Zippo wind resistance. If you find that your flame on maximum is still too small, you can actually turn the dial further than the highest flame setting, just use a little more pressure while turning, and it will engage and open up more.

I think the Thunderbird insert (the butane yellow flame version, NOT the torch version), is the greatest invention in lighters since the Zippo, not kidding. It solves all the problems of a Zippo (i.e., that damned smelly, irritating, quick-evaporating lighter fluid).

cheers

Depends on the knife. My routine "5 count" check when I leave the house is:
Keys
Phone
Wallet
Knife
Watch

I like sleek folders like the Kershaw Leek. So I have no problem clipping them in my right front pocket, which is where I keep my phone. It doesn't get in the way.

If I can I try to carry it by itself but I will throw in the money clip or pen into the same pocket if need be.

If I'm wearing jeans or dockers, my knife is usually in a belt sheath on my belt next to my multitool, I just dont like the feeling of sitting with a knife in my front pocket. If I'm wearing cargo pants, my knife is usually in my right side cargo pocket with my hankerchief.

I don't usually pay attention to what goes in the pocket with my knife, but I usually do have other stuff in there. Mostly just my university i.d. card so I don't have to pull it out of my wallet all the time.

My folder is usually riding solo - I try not to put anything else in that pocket.

I always carry a Vic Climber - that rides next to my wallet in back pocket.

I carry my larger, clipped equipped, in my right front pocket, and all by itself. Nothing else goes in that pocket. My left hand pocket has change, small medicine bottle (actually one of those advil bottle sorta the size of a chapstick), and my slipjoint folder. Keys hang on a lefthand side beltloop via a caribeiner , and phone rides horizontally on my righthand side clipped to my belt. Wallet goes in my right rear, and that is all I have.

My Lighter will go in my pocket with a knife usually, but that's it. I almost always use pocket clips unless i'm carrying my Buck 110. If I carry the 110 then my lighter goes in a different pocket.

Depends on the knife.

If I am carrying two slip joints (some times large and small pioneer/scout) go in right and left front pocket. I try to keep those pockets pretty much clear. Sometimes a Burts Beeswax which won't scratch it all up. Sometimes I carry a fixed blade Busse BAD front right pocket. Some times a Recon 1 back pocket and slip joint front pocket. My keys are on a large carabiner and get clipped to my d ring on the belt. (when I am in a suit for work, I have to leave my gear in the car all day, so I don't carry as much, just a slip joint, and a locking folder in the "junk drawer" on in the center storage of the car.

It is more than just not wanting to scratch the knife up, although I don't want to do that either. I don't like stuff banging together in my pocket. One hard thing per pocket as a general rule.

Hey thanks for the reply, Ya I collect a lot of lighters and I tried all of this and more I think mine just may be a "dud" unfortunately. I'm back to using my favorite roller bar styled lighters. (I bought the zippo insert because I smoke cigars, and that fuel messes up the taste hella lot.) I may pick up a few more to get a nice working one.

I have my wallet in my back pocket, my cell phone in my left pocket, and whatever else (keys, etc.) in my right pocket. I would rather not break my phone screen than have a scratch on my knife so the knife goes in the right pocket. I have my knife clipped most of the time though so it isn't rubbing against my keys.

Hi ono724 -

Right front pocket is for a clip-knife and otherwise kept empty.

Left front pocket has my Vic Waiter, keys and cash.

The Waiter looks like it was tumbled.

best regards -

That shouldn't happen again if you switch to tip-up carry clips ;)

I got my cell phone in the same pocket as my knife (right front) and i take it out of there quite often. When i go to the university it's usually more often than the knife...

I've noticed quite a few people not mention cell phones. Don't you guys use cell phones?

I carry cellphone in my left, and my knife in right pocket. Also in right pocket is my wallet. Sometimes the knife is in way when reaching for wallet, and Im quite aware of exposing the knife in public. That's why I've often carried my knives without clip (also being more comfortable for hand).

I carry a cell phone in my left pocket together with a Spyderco Police clipped to same pocket. Right pocket carrys my keys and change, sometimes heaps of change which scratch up knives, so no knives in that pocket. On the belt on my right a folding Buck Kalinga, and for most of the time I carry a fixed blade on the belt on my left.

I carry either a Case Peanut or Swayback Jack in my watch/change pocket (because they fit!), plus a BK14 and a Wenger SI in my Wenger "man purse". Go ahead, laugh, I carry a "murse".
