How many own/carry "pure combat monster knives"?

Before I joined the military I bought a Gerber Mark I, a cool looking knife. After I joined my peers gave me the evil eye about carrying it into the field. It now collect dust in my house and it not good pizza knife. Endre

I own a Recon Scout(totally useless except as a hacker) a large Buck, a Ka-Bar, and I guess the one true fighter which is all it is really good for a Black Jack 1-7. It has a stag grip on it that I would like to change. Anybody know of anyone that does this type of thing. I am also finishing a blank of a 1-7 that is one of Engaths lasts ones and I have
large clip point blank that I ground before I was laid off from Kodak. This is probably the nicest knife I have ground ever. 440c that Rockwells at 59. Anyways I am of the opinion that if a knife is to be used as a fighter then that is all it should be used for and it should be as sharp as you can get it. The 1-7 definetly fits the bill on that one. I can't see me using it for anything but that. I actually wanted it just cause you can't get them anymore.Anyways keep'em sharp

Don't actually have one, but I'm thinking about it (Along with a few dozen others *Sigh*)

Buck Nighthawk. It's simple, and it works.

Gerber, MKII, LMF.. Kukhri. Microtech Socom. Butterflys. Numerous really cheap knives w/BIG @$$ blades..

If it's sharp I love it. If it's *wicked*, I BUY it.

My big blade is a 8.5-inch CS Recon Scout, and, I might note, hacking is only ONE of the things its good for

I'll admit to having a Buck or two with blades that are beyond plain utility length
wink.gif

a Special, a Nighthawk. But the real monster, a Spec Plus Marine Raider(by Ontario) that I got for a bush knife. The Raider has a 10" tool steel blade that will handle probably any task I set it to. AND it didn't cost $300. However, it's so big that the bush is the only place it "fits".

I'm not MAINLY into fighting knives, but the best "pure combat" knife I have is a Polkowski CQ Fighter. It's small, but easy to carry and conceal, and the design agrees with me. It's a true fighter.

Due to my states laws I can't carry what I consider my 'monster knives' but own and love my Al Mar Smatchet and QuestIII. Don't know if an old Blackjack Viking Raider Axe counts but it is a monster.
For casual(outside work) carry it's usually one of my 5" Cold Steel folders and a smaller utility/back-up/for general use in front of public without too much mass grief folder.

Thanks,
Ken

Martial arts are not my department, but among the knives mentioned above, that Smatchet says "pure combat" to me. The kukri was also mentioned above. The kukri is not a pure combat monster. The kukri, like the machete, is an essential agricultural tool and household appliance in its native environmnet. Of course, what works on firewood also works on flesh and bone.

Every tool that can do work can do damage. Many tools that can do damage can do work. Maybe even all. It's an intersting exercise, imagining how to beat a sword into a plowshare, or a plowshare into a sword. I an told by a nice left-handed clergyman that a Cold Steel Vaquero Grande is a superb tool for cutting cheese into very thin slices.

There's been a bit of discussion elsewhere on the Net on forging ball peen hammers into tomahawks. What I wonder is if any bladesmith out there actually beaten a sword into a plowshare that could be used for farming, in some century or another.

well James, I regret selling my M-1 Garand rifle made by International Harvester (beat plowshares into swords). I've got a Civilian but, don't carry it, and I carry a Recon Scout in the field.

Longbow,

As far as changing the 1-7 I think you would be better off selling it and buying one with say a micarta handle or tradeing it for one. With the way that knife is made it would be quite a head ache to change the handle.

James? Ummm...minor thing, but...the point here is that people are willing to spend perfectly good cash on knives that will *only* be used as "pure fighters", and hence are at least potential buyers of same.

In the US, a good percentage of all Khukuris sold are bought as "pure combat monsters" by people who have zero intent to chop wood with one. Likewise, a few commando daggers are probably sold to people who see them as perfectly reasonable fishing knives. Both cases may be unusual, the latter probably moreso although my dad did exactly that once.

Point is, there's a viable market for "pure fighters". Spyderco and Benchmade are two outfits that are losing out with the "4 inch and under rule" they've stuck with to date. Sal Glesser is showing the first signs of weakening in that regard, and I hope this thread is making some impact in that regard with him and other makers.

That was my reason for starting it.

Longbow -- I agree with Tom regarding your stag-handled I-7. Why not try posting a FS/FT ad on the forum before doing anything drastic?

Big Blades Rule. Great Dane size blade aficionado's don't miss the article on CPM3V steel in the Feb 99 issue of Knives Illustrated. This steel appears to be superbly suited to large blades requiring superlative impact resistance and premier edge holding,
Stainless devotee that I am,although CPM3V is not stainless, the author advises its composition has a respectable 7.5 percent Chromium with goodly amounts of vanadium and molybdenum like CPM 420V and CPM 440V. How about over 2 times the impact resistance of D2 with comparable edge holding at rockwell 58!
Sounds like what I need for a Bowie/Kukri.

Jim, I still say a folding auto Wakizashi/Katana powered by a spare 1911 recoil spring sounds kewl. A California legal
CUDA style actuated version incorporating a foot lever is no prob.

I almost fell outta my chair with Mike Turbers' photo."Does this count?" ROFL
I said to myself,Mike,"How could u forget to
give Jim a smiley face"
Sure enough I scroll down and see Jim's Full grin smiley and totally lost it.

Duh I forgot the politically non correct knife I carry everyday. Gotta be my Lg.Vaquero! I *have* used it once or twice in semi safe company to slice hamburger rolls or cut open a particularly ornery box but even other people who carry knives gasp when I pull it out. But if I ever have to get in a fight with a knife(heaven forbid!) and it has to be a folder and not my monster bowie(DOH!) then the Vaq. is my top choice. There isn`t a super duper custom 4" folder in the world I`d trade for that cheap zytel CS with the extra inch of recurved serrated flat ground steel. Now if I could just get one made in VG10 or 440V with a plain edge or serrations that are easy to sharpen, titanium liners and G10 scales I`d be in heaven. Heck a 5" Pinnacle ,Axis,CUDA,Spydie Military etc. would be great! Anyone out there listening? Marcus

Yeah, my Vaquero Grande is basicaly a *pure fighter* if for no other reason than because I don't want to have to sharpen the darn thing very often

I don't know about pizza surgery, but Mike's "Does this Count" Bladder Releaser appears to have a Heineken bottle cap opener forward of the D guard. Imagine getting a nuggie with that pommel,Yikes!
Forget about weapon retention, an offender would need an electromagnet to get that or Jim's Outsider away. Waitin on my HI khukri and still saving for some of Kevins pedigreed pooches.

My interest in knives is multilevel but mostly as a tool. As far as fighters go, my recent
acquisition of a Mad Dog Panther should put me in the “gonzo fighter” interest category.
FWIW, my main purpose for this blade is dispatching dogs while cycling and running. 20
years ago I never met a dog I could not handle. Things are different today. It seams that
many irresponsible folks want a dobe or rotwieler trained as an attack dog and then just let
the dog manage it’s own affairs. It’s not worth the penalties to carry a gun for this,
besides they are to heavy. BTW, the Panther in a Dundee rig is the most comfortable set
up I have ever used on a run.

I also carry a Vaquero Grande daily to supplement a Sebenza and Pygmy ATAK. The VG
is only for emergencies or things uniquely suited to it’s serrated edge, like cutting #7 weed
trimmer line. It’s just too hard to sharpen.

My Ang Kola Khukuri is not a fighter in my mind. It’s just the best
hatchet/machete/survival tool I have found.
