How many packs/kits do you keep?

Good question. I've got an Arc Terryx Bora 80 for winter backpacking, a Cabelas Scout for elk hunting, a Maxped Versipac for EDC, and around 6 smaller PSK's stashed with various weapons and in various vehicles. Can't be too prepared:)

Let's see...

1. Belt kit. Maxped low profile pouch with psk stuff, and GI canteen w/ cup. I have a 3-5" fixed blade and Vic Swisstool Spirit on the belt as well. Usually this is what I use as a base kit; it's the minimum I take when hiking, especially if it's a longer trail.

2. Camelbak mil HAWG. Hiking backpack, carries a few redundant essentials, mostly more durable or better versions (heavy duty space blanket/tarp, weather dependent clothes, flashlight and headlamp, paracord, folding saw, extra firestarting stuff, extra water purification tabs and a secondary container, compass and map, FAK, heavy duty contractor trash bags, etc.)

3. Maxpedition Bottle Holder kit. Has two pouches attached, one for a boo-boo kit and the other for cordage, a few firestarters, and space for added items. Usually used on short walks or outings in the city or parks.

4. Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon II. EDC Backpack that has PSK stuff and a FAK in it. I live in earthquake country and I commute to work. So I carry stuff to help see me through a disaster where I'd be stuck in the city. Really only has one or two different things from my Hiking pack and belt kit though (Heavy Leather work gloves, Pepper spray, can't think of what else right now).

5. Car kit. All in a duffel bag, has PSK, FAK, and cutlery stuff, couple of liters of water, Blanket, towels, etc. This kit tends to get the "overflow" from my other kits since it's stationary for the most part. But I keep it in a duffel so I can carry it if need be. Also have a light daypack in it, in case I need to travel lighter or more comfortably.

I guess 5 it is :)

I made a belt-pouch kit for my Lady too, so I guess that makes 6 actually.

Glad to see I'm not the only who rather than simply moving one kit from vehicle to vehicle has justified making one for each vehicle and one for the house with a couple of small kits for fun.

I've tried that method (moving back and forth) and things get out of place and left behind too easily- it's a rather large outlay to outfit everything properly, but it sure makes it a lot nicer knowing that when you head out that everything is there

there still is some minor moving back and forth (would have to hit the lotto to fully outfit every single kit :D), but for the most part I've bit the bullet and equipped each kit so it stands on it's own

I feel so normal round here!
Truck has a toolbox with enough stuff to build a shelter, create fire in several ways, food, pine stakes for kindling, shovel, hatchet, rope, para cord, water and hikers filter, blanket, sun screen, bug spray, small cook set, knives, tools, ammo, first aid kit, whistle, light fishing gear, LED light, and a bag to put some of it in if need be. I keep a small medicine bottle in my truck, on my bike, and in my day bag with benadryl, ES Tylenol, ibuprofin, and aspirin in it. You'd be surprised how many times I have used some of those products and been really glad I had them available and not had to wait till I got home. Don't let the gas tank get to empty either!

Maxpedition fatboy goes with me every day. It has my cell and charger, new Busse SAR 3 in kydex strapped on it, LED light, Wave multi tool, sharpener, pen, glasses, usually has my lunch in it and the things I use daily. Its my man purse and I dont even care.

Backpack in closet with lots of the above mentioned items in it on a scaled down version.

I'm a serious gear whore.
Ha! Good term. I probably fall into that catagory, too. I am always collecting, testing, and using new gear, while seldom getting rid of any of the old stuff.

As far as "how many packs/kits I keep" I guess I have four main ones. I generally keep completly separate inventories of gear in each bag (ex. each bag has its own FAK, etc), rather than moving stuff back and forth from one to the other, as when I did that in the past I invariably forgot something.

  1. Daypack - This is a large Camelbak hydration pack I keep constantly full of the "essentials" so I can be ready for a walk in the woods at any time.
  2. Car Bag - This is a small duffle I keep in my car, with some car-related emergency gear, plus a few survival essentials.
  3. BOB - My constantly evolving 72-hour bag has food, clothing, shelter and survival gear, ready to go at the drop of a hat.
  4. Backpack - This is my multi-day pack. I generally keep a few basic things in here (FAK, cook kit, stove, water bottles, etc.), but normally I'll pack it when I need it so I can take just the things I need for the specific trip I have planned based on lenght of time, terrain, and weather.
Now, I have several other packs in my gear closet (fanny pack, wet bag, duluth pack, etc.) that occasionally see some use, but they are all stored empted and only pulled out and packed if I actually need them.

I have rearranged and deleted some of my kits lately. I have a kit attached to my Fox kabar that stays under my carseat and a larger kit for my family should we ahve to exit our vehicle it is in the back of eth van and a large ruck kit at home. I may make a small kit and put it in my workbag but I really dont need it since I carry everything with me as far as basic gear to get to my larger packs.

more than I can carry, and that number is growing. I'm steadily trying to assemble all my excess gear into useable spare backpacking kits or bugout bags for friends and family, filling in the holes I have in necessities as I can afford them. I definately have my own designated comprehensive bugout bag, so I know which one I'm grabbing. Need to do some sheathwork for mounting machetes and tomahawks and hand axes etc. to the other packs as well, but they are coming along. Toucan, the Redwing is an AWESOME bag for a complete bugout kit.

I have 3...ish

An Altoids tin kit that rides in my pocket more or less everywhere.
A small kit in a maxpedition proteus waistpack
And finally my backpack.

I say 3'ish because the backpack and waist pack are set up to be carried together without too much redundancy. The small pack's gear selection is weighted a bit more toward 'survival' and the backpack towards 'camping'

well lets see
1. blackhawk tactical ems pack with all my als emt goodies
2. bob is a eberlestock m4 operator set up for world war 3
3 edc is a max ped jvp with esential gear
4.my bush bag is a wildernessoutfitters shoulder bag full of stuff to bushwack with
5.hunting i got a camelback mule made by blackwater all camoed out .
this is the main gear but have lots of stuff always on me
always 2 knives, streamlight mini stream a repair needle and about 45 feet of kevlar thread wrapped around my izula sheath..just to mname a few

My primary camping gear is in a couple of Rubbermaid bins in the garage, but I do have to rudimentary packs.

One is a nice L.L. Bean rucksack that I keep in the trunk of my car. It contains a Helle Futura, various firestarting stuff, rainsuit, warm clothes, bivy shelter, light, several MREs, messkit, canteen, water filter, supercat stove w/fuel and there is always a flat of water in the trunk too. It is incomplete, but it's a good start.

The other kit is much smaller and is in a cheap hydration pack. I have a Ural motorcycle/sidecar rig that often finds itself exploring logging trails, etc. so this kit is on board in case I get stranded out there. It contains a Mora 510, firestarting stuff, an MRE, drum liners, light, FAK, space blanket, supercat stove/fuel, cooking pot, cup, and a couple bottles of water

I have Several "Tin type Kits"
Several "Ottor Box" versions
I have one in a Junglas Backpack
I have one in my Truck that comes & goes daily from home to truck(I never leave in overnight) or into vehicle I am riding in.
and I have so much Extra's parts & piece it ain't funny (too my wife) :D

I have about a dozen. My three large packs are a Gregory Dru, Osprey Atmos 85 and a old Hine-Snowbridge Alpha Special (Which I now primarily use for ice fishing).

In the mid range I have an Arc'Terex RT45, Lowe Cloudwalker 2 and a MEC Klettersack. I also have a few hunting packs made by Rocky.

For smaller packages I have a few MEC fanny packs and home made survival kits I have made up, mostly in Pelican or Plano boxes, and a work related cruising vest.

I guess at my age of 50 I have been blessed enough to accumulate extra equipment to make up kits quickly for several scenarios such as quick day hikes, overnight camping , working in the woods, and vehicle emergencies.
