How many people have you convinced to have an EDC knife, or even converted to carrying somthing besides a slipjoint?

My father who has always been a gun collector started collecting knives only after I took an interest. I was very lucky that he and my mom really spoiled me with knife collecting when I was just a youngin', but he never really carried a knife every day. My wife and I took my parents out to eat for fathers day, and gave him a Kershaw Scallion. He loves it, and has carried it every day. Since, he has bought another from me with a combo edge.

My older brother has carried a Case Trapper as far back as I can remember, and I gave him a CRKT M16 Carson Flipper that he hasn't been able to put down since. He has even tried to get my Onion, and a few others.

Unfortunately only one. I gave my friend a knife for her birthday one year and she's been carrying one ever since. I've been dragging my friend to the local gun/knife show for the past couple years and at the last one she even bought more stuff than I did. She currently carries a CRKT KFF and rarely (if ever) leaves home without it. She's been eyeing my balisongs for awhile now and if she's nice to me then she just might get one for her birthday this year.

I've started that on one of my friends ;)

For me it's zero...all the 'knife' people I know were into it way before me...and when I'm with my 'non-knife-carrying' friends I hardly ever talk about knives unless they ask me...

Zero for me also. Most of the people I know carry
guns so they don't view a knife as primary defense
weapon.

Being here in Texas most of us do carry guns, but a knife has its many every day uses.

The best I've been able to do so far is to convince my kids' scout leaders that a knife is an essential part of their equipment. I was amazed, and dismayed, to see that only one out of seven or eight scout leaders carried a knife during activities. I distributed knives to everyone and tried to impress upon them the importance of being properly equipped. It seems to have worked. I don't know if they carry knives during their day to day lives, but they sure do for scout activity. It was the same thing for flashlights. They'd go out for nighttime activity, and half the scout leaders wouldn't think to bring a flashlight! I try not to lecture, but, jeez, you really want the people in charge of your children to have more common sense than that.

I'd say 3-4...but frankly I'm not certain that it stuck each time.

I find that most guys don't carry a knife these days so when I meet someone and start hanging out with them on a regular basis, if I realize they don't carry a knife I usually buy them one and then adhere to the tradition of trading it to them for the smallest currency they have on them at the moment.

I know at least two still carry either that knife I gave them or one they have upgraded to.

My newest target...well the problem is he is a trial lawyer so he spends so much time going into public buildings that I doubt he would bother to carry it often....still. I'm going to try.

I usually give them either a little Kershaw or a SAK.

To me, it is common sense to carry a knife. I end up needing a knife for some purpose at least once a day and I can't imagine that its not the same for pretty much anyone else...so.....why then if you have a need for something on a regular basis wouldn't you carry it around with you?

Dad always carries a knife and always has as did his father. I can't imagine not carrying one....even though it is getting more inconvenient in some ways because of all the bonehead places they search you now.

only 3 :)
My sister (two years ago I bought ther 4" knife to have something in ther car, but she carries it on daily bases in her backpack)
and couple of my friends. one got SAK for a birthday another saw few my EDC and decided it's "cool" so he got one for himself too :)

and when I'm with my 'non-knife-carrying' friends I hardly ever talk about knives unless they ask me...

Same here.

Actually, with any friends who DO carry a knife, they always have some no name knife they never use because it'll get dull:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: *coughcoughCheapSteel*cough*

Can't wait to tell them about my new $120 Tomcat...

I've tried to get my brother hooked on knives too. He still doesn't carry everyday, but I think I'm on the verge of getting him there. Just need to show him a few more knife applications.

He loves camping and military stuff in general. He's an instructor in a semi-military training program for youngsters, and I can't believe he doesn't carry anything more than an SAK. I guess that's a start though.

I gave him the first knife I bought (Gerber AR3.00), and I plan on getting him something even better for his birthday. Too bad about the under-3" knife laws in Hong Kong. I guess exceptions can be made if you're obviously camping.

My dad thinks SAK's are handy, but he only uses the crap knives that have blades as dull as my SAK screwdrivers. I sharpened it for him, and he's amazed. I'll have to get him a nice SAK sometime. But he'd think it was just a waste of money.

My mother has a nice SAK, but she's unreasonably afraid about sharp blades, so she turned down my offer to sharpen it. I did, however, sharpen all the kitchen knives and everybody's amazed at how they don't need to hammer the knife into the-object-to-be-cut anymore.

Anyone notice the SAK pattern? That's where I started too. Dang nifty little devices they are, though my Micra serves me well even after I lost my Victorinox Tinker. I got a Gerber MP400 after that to fulfil my semi-large-multitool need.

Apparently it's bad luck to give someone a knife as a present, in Chinese culture. Something about the knife symbolizing a cutting of bonds. Whoops. :)

Both my dad and wife now carry a Vic Classic on their keychain. I tried for years to get my dad to carry, which is strange because HIS dad is the main reason I'm such a knife knut. But every blade I gave his just ended up in the drawer. Then I got him a Classic and he doesn't leave home without it. He was bummed when it got taken by some post-9/11 security guard at the airport. But that just made choosing his Christmas gift all the more easy. Now he's back in business. :D My wife was the veritable anti-knife-knut. Then, one day, she commented how it might be handy to have a little knife with scissors, like mine. Yeah, I guess that might be handy, I chuckled. Then I discretely logged on the computer and ordered on online as one of her birthday gifts. ;)

I converted my brother-in-law by giving him a Spyderco Merlin, which he wears around work at all times. He was already a multitool wearer so it was a fairly effortless assimilation, and the serrated hawkbill complements it. My 9-yr-old nephew is also a multitool guy. However, my sister doesn't carry the engraved Spydercard I gave her, as I would have liked.

I know this is an old thread, but maybe some others would like to contribute as well.

I have convinced at least 4 people (that i can think of) to carry an EDC blade daily. one of my older brothers, one of my younger brothers, one of my best friends, and an associate at work.

they are all very in tune with EDC now. they have finally realized a knife's great potential and uses in everyday life :)

thanks,

A few dozen after they received them as gifts.

A few had to be given a couple of folders before they found one they liked and would carry.

Of the converts, mostly I hear how they are amazed they got along without one for so long and feel naked if they don't have it with them now.

I'm still working on it--but a couple of weeks ago I helped move my mother into an assisted-living place in another state and I was equipped with a Leatherman Wave and a folder and I was the only one ready to handle the box-opening/tape cutting/cardboard-cutting tasks.

At least I've got them all thinking. ;)

I have to admit I've actively been recruiting for the ranks of EDC'ers. Whether it be birthdays holidays whatever the reason I can, I try and get members of the family and friends a knife to commemorate the event.

I've tried to match up items I've found on sale with professions and things like that. The success stories include (NOTE: this is over a few years not all at once):

My Dad just got a new buck assisted opener for fathers day. Its his first EDC. My uncle recieved a kershaw chive for x-mas his first EDC. My brother is currently deciding what knife he wants to buy to be his EDC. My mother now carries a SAK in her purse. So id say its a start

about 14 people, or more. Many, well most (may be all), I gave knives to as presents, for birthday, etc. Many laughed at me, or looked at me like I was "not quite right", but after finding many uses for a one handed knife, or sak they have begun to, and continue to, understamd the usefullness of the pocket knife ;)

My favorite "win overs", are my wife, mother, my daughter (tears in my eyes). :)
