1) Large Sebbie Stars and Stripes w/ BG42 blade
1) Large Unique Graphic Sebbie w/part serrations, polished blade and dual thumbstuds. BG42 blade material
1) NICA large Sebbie with CPM S30v blade material.
1)Mnundi with rosewood handle inserts,BG42 blade material.
The Mnundi goes everywhere with me in my left breast pocket. The only people who have ever "made" it for a knife are other Reeve fans. The others get rotated in and out on a daily basis. The NICA goes in the pants pocket and the 2 graphics ride in Reeve leather beltsheaths when they are carried. I know they can cost as much as a custom, but in my mind they are in a different catagory. I would never actually carry or use my Ralphs or Carsons. I don't feel a bit of apprehension with the 'Benzas. Now I do save them for defensive/critical use and use the Chive on my keychain for mundane tasks such as box and letter opening. This is not so much to protect them but to make sure I have a shaving sharp edge when I need it most. They are tough, ergonomic, practical tools for serious knife lovers. The fact that they defy catagorization adds to the uniqueness. For the most part,I have found that the people who complain about their high price and non-custom status have not used one on a daily basis for a long period of time.
That's okay too. There are lots of good knives out there. Ya pays yer dough and ya takes yer chances.

I used to own a smalll decorated. I traded it and never regretted it.
It has some nice features. The spine of the blade was what I liked best.

Crashlander, can you give me some more info on this knifemaker? Any links or a website? THanks:)

@ General: Sure, we Europeans should work together. Ooops, sorry, You´re from the UK :)
Just kidding

The homepage is www.schanz-knives.de

Heres a picture of the knife with a tanto blade:

And here with "starmate" blade:

I went to Juergen Schanz's website, and every knife that I looked at was either a copy of someone else's work or a hybrid of two people's work. Not in good taste, in my opinion. Now I don't read German, so maybe he deals with a lot of makers, but I seriously doubt he's worked with all those people. C'mon. Look more like expensive ripoffs to me. There were Kasper designs, Terzoula, Spyderco, Perrin, Reeve, etc etc.

From the first time I saw a Sebenza, I figured that it was a "must have" folder. Ken Lunde recommended the Sebenza for anyone who wanted a folder that acted like a "one-piece". He was right. I've never been so pleased with a folder as I have been with my Sebenza. An Umfaan is next.

For me the lefty sebenza was the cheapest knife I've ever bought, now I look at knives and think to myself"cool, but not as cool as what's in my pocket" Might have to get a TNT one of these days.

Well, the only knife design of Schanz I like is the Frame lock. Maybe it is a copy of the sebenza, but how I said before in Germany it is cheaper than the sebbie, You have a bigger range in blade steels, finishes and designs and its a one-man-made knives. The starmate blade was made after a customer wish.

I don´t like the other designs of Juergen very much, but I don´t think they´re all copys. Especially the Tanto style knifes are very special.
Juergen is the Purveyor to the court of the mongolian prince Ganjuuryn Dschero Khan, a descendant of Dschingis Khan.

I bought a large plain a few years ago and had to sell it. I just bought another large plain Sebenza a couple of weeks ago, and it is not going anywhere for a long time. Perfect lockup with absolutely no vertical or horizontal blade play. A folding fixed blade is a good description of a Sebenza.

And it always comes up......comparing a TnT to a Sebenza. Last time I checked a TnT was about $550.00 with a wait. Big D1

Hmmmm, thanks for the link.

They do indeed look like a combo of designs, but a sebi handle with a starmate blade with Spyderhole is a great design. If someone can handmake the best parts from different models I say way to go! You get the best of all worlds.:)

I've got a ;arge plain and a small plain. If I could have just two folders, these would be the two. If I could have one, it would be the large.

Could they be a bit cheaper in price? Probably. Could they be any better for a user folder? NO!

Normally I would agree on this point, however...

This is not a mass produced design here, it is a handmade knife to order. Any knifemaker could do the same thing right? Give me this, this and oh, this?

No where else but custom can you get all the best elements from different design schools, makers and the basic 'thing' that makes the knife so different. If a knife combines all these 'elements' in my opinion it becomes a different product altogether.

Lets face it, if its such a great idea, why not license the package and make it? If Spyderco made a knife a little like the Benza with a Ti Framelock and a SpyderHole (TM) I for one would by one.

At least this way you can buy the knife with the elements you REALLY want. I love the Benza, but I don't love the thumbstud. Its the one real nagging thing that bothers me. Put a SpyderHole into the package and it would be my perfect knife. Thats what we all want in the end right? A custom knife with all the bits you like and none of the bits you don't. Oh and with top notch quality and materials to boot. You are a very lucky person if a mass production knife meets this requirement and I would say the Sebi comes darn clsoe for me. That little change would make it perfect.

So lisence be damned, if someone can put together a package that is better overall then I will have no guilty concience ordering it. As someone said, it has all been done before and I think custom makers are excempt from this issue (or they aught to be).

We the customer tell the maker what to make, we thus are the intellectual theives here, we want this and we want that:p So what? Its my money and if I want a product to look or act in a certain way then that is up to me.

I am not being or rather trying to be hostile here, but flipping heck! I am so sick of the possibility of combining great idea's never happening as the greatness is spread out around a number of different makers. Give the custom guys a break and let them do the limited runs. IIRC Sal said he does not mind if custom makers use the SpyderHole. I might be very wrong on this:confused:

However if a mass production maker was to 'steal' the idea's I would be VERY unhappy. What do the rest of us think on this?

Wayne,

Sal allows custom makers to use the hole for a small fee.

If the customer is the one stealing designs and asks the maker to do it, that's a whole 'nother problem. While the maker's ignorance of the patents and licenses might absolve him of our judgement, he is still making money off of someone else's work.

Besides, Mr. Schanz's website contains many pre-made knives, presumably ready to order, which 'borrow' from other makers' designs. They aren't one-off pieces that customers asked for.

You say:
If Spyderco made a knife a little like the Benza with a Ti Framelock and a SpyderHole (TM) I for one would by one.

Well Sal has stated that he has the integrity not to make such a thing unless it's a collaboration with Mr Reeve. Not because of legal issues with making a conventional Ti-Framelock, but because of ethical ones.

You should check out the Ti-Salsa. It incorporates the newer compression lock into a frame-lock format.

I think your attitude is selfish, Wayne.

Sorry to hijack this thread.

For some reason, I have a Plain Large and Small Sebenza and the Mnandi. They are good knives but I just don't use them. I prefer a lockback and a thumbstud with natural scale material. How I ended up with the 3 knives, I am not completely sure.

Regarding the Sebenza: I keep looking at them and fondling them, but as of yet I have not bought one. I guess I put a value on a knife based on what I want it to do. My current collection has many different knives and I switch off from one to the other. My EDC keeps coming back to one of my Commanders, which I really really like. A Sebenza seems like a great understated design, made from state of the art materials. For me however, it is just too "understated".

I am not in the mood to spend $350 for a knife that comes across as a gentlemans folder. I am a biker by lifestyle and hobby and the Sebenza seems just too much like a gentleman's large "money clip". It just does not suit my lifestyle.

Am I admitting that I am not a gentleman? Ooops!

LOL! Funny post! The SEbenza would chew up a Commander and spit it out in a second!:p :p :p

Contreversial comments aside, the Sebi is FAR stronger, tougher and better built that that Commander thingy...:p ;)

A Benza is understated but its a Tank in a suit! Armour plated and far far stronger.

The Commander sure looks the part... ;) :p

The Benza just does the job, no frills unless it makes it a better knife. Just the way I like it. Like my audio set up. No flashing lights or weird sets ups, just massive power from the best marks in the business. I know what I want, like you know whay you want. The Benza is the better knife though.;) :D

The General: I think you are missing my point.

My post was really not meant to be "funny". It was meant to express my own opinion about what I want to own and why I want to own it. I never said the Commander was "better" than the Sebenza. In fact I said that the Sebenza was a "great understated design made from state of the art materials". CR's quality is very good. In fact some of my best fixed blades are Chris Reeve knives. Read my post again. My point is that I don't care if the Sebenza is "better", it is simply not for me. Debating which knife is "better" and "stronger" for daily normal usage, for another person, is a bit silly.

I really don't want to get into a tedious "debate" as to which knife is better for my usage. I know what I like and why. I will not get sucked in to the typical "my knife is tougher than your knife" conversation.
