Thought about a poll but convos around here have been interesting lately. So I had a crucarta, picked up a rex 45 on here, and ordered a maxamet after I noticed they sold out on bladehq. I like knifing with and sharpening different types of steels. It doesn't have to be a new super steel, but something I haven't used.

I guess I'm okay with the 3. Besides for the obvious being steel, the crucarta has oversized liners, the rex 45 is copper with no liners, and the maxamet is g10 with normal liners. I think I haven't got the maxamet here yet but I'm hoping it is cause I ordered a lotus scale with it. I think they might all become users. Mostly because it'll be fun to see how the same blade in different steels compare. If I start carrying the crucarta n copper jobbies around I don't see any reason I'd get rid of them. The blades will patina, the handles will too in a way.. The maxamet I could part with if at some point something better comes. From the charts I'm not impressed with magnacut too much, so I doubt it'd be soon.

Does this make since? Not the magnacut thing. If you're a fan chill I might try to replace my gaurdian 3 with a 3.5 in it, so it'll probably be given a chance too. More just how in the last six months or so I went from 0 pm2s to 3. I find it both cool and dumb at the same time. But with the rex n maxamet there are other spydercos, but not much else for options that's made domestically and available.

To each their own, but for me I could justify one in a good stainless and another in a good tool steel, and maybe a third with a tanto or wharnecliffe. But after that I'd be looking at something different. But that's just me. Some guys want every iteration of a single knife, and that's cool. I'd rather have more unique designs myself.

2, one stainless and one non-stainless, was exactly what I was thinking.

The blade could be 1/4 to 3/8 longer n still fit in the handle. You do have a point there. I like the handle though. A much bigger fan of the pm2 than I am the 3.

So we are both at 3 but for different reasons. The tanto I saw in person has some crazy grind lines to it. Not really my thing. I've never seen a wharne in person but it sounds cool.

I am a fan of pm2, my favorite modern folder. I have one, and that's enough because I like the steel I have (m4). I have thought about a crucarta because I like both cruwear and micarta, but I just can't justify it for myself. I am less of a collector/accumulator than most folks here. Having more than one could make sense to me as I have described with the crucarta, but I would be driven more by handle materials than steel. I see no value at all in having maxamet and not using it, since the value of the steel is in using long periods without resharpening.
At the end of the day the answer to your question only you can say. It's what satisfies your desires, not what makes sense to someone else. That said, you have my views to compare.

I have a PM2 in S30V, which I bought (on sale) because I was interested in the compression lock. Nice knife, but it could use more blade. I keep it in the SUV for emergencies. But you can never have too many knives 😁 .

If you dig them and find a reason to have them all, then that's all that matters. Plenty of guys have a favorite Spyderco model and collect it in nearly every steel they offer. I personally like to experience different models in the interesting steels that Spyderco offers, though I have a strong preference towards the Manix.

Well, for a time, 2. I've had the same PM2 since April 2014. CPM-S30V, RGT burlap micarta scales, black screws, black MXG deep carry clip. Normally, I do not buy duplicates. If I lose a knife, its an excuse to try something new. However. HOWEVER. I have been considering breaking my no duplicates rule for the Cutlery Shoppe PM2 wharncliffe. I love the blade shape, its different enough from the regular PM2, and its my favorite steel, CTS-XHP.

I have three, one in regular S30v, one in S110v (Blurple version) and the tanto version. I have one more in me, a serrated PM2 and then I’m done.

Out of all the knives I own, I find the PM2 carried on the belt (with a very nominal narrow leather sheath that I found on Etsy years ago) carries the best for me.

Thread drift: I’ve been trying to find a similar sheath for my other Spyderco’s and have utterly failed. Most are big hunks of leather that are bulky. This one is just so superb. Anyone on here a leather maker that I could send a picture of this sheath to take a look and see if this style can be recreated?

IMO 2 are fine
One stainless and one carbon is a good way to go

However if you want more, it will be good too 😀

How do you get a patina like that?

How do you get a patina like that?
A mixture of apple cider vinegar and mustard, applied in a pattern using a toothpick. Let it sit for 30 min, rinse and repeat, 3-5 times. It's where the various layers overlapped that you get the blues and purples at some angles in the right light. That's the method I used on the Rex45 Native and the K390 Stretch.

On the Maxamet Para 3 I just did an apple cider vinegar soak, and on the CRU-WEAR Manix I did an acid wash followed by a brushed finish
