Yeah, apart from 1500 grit I also have a strop loaded with green polish and another one that is bare leather - I kinda think that I should be able to get a good edge with 1500 followed by a few minutes of stropping.

i convexed my izula a couple weeks back and am very satisfied. it was my first time trying it and i was sure i was going to ruin the blade. low n behold it's one of the sharpest blades i carry. i didn' have access to a gel mousepad and i swear i couldnt find any at the local stores so... i used a sponge 
it actually worked just fine, i just made sure not to use alot of pressure. went from 120 grit to 200-350-400-600-800-1500-200. alot more work than necessary but since i was gonna mirror polish the blade i figured i should do my best
