I was tired last night when I posted. I've remembered four more this morning. That makes a total of 14 vises. Good Lord, I need help. Is there a support group for people that have too many vises? ;)

Four, including the drill press vice. Most of the time its all I need, but there are times when more would be better, that's when I improvise with the C clamps.

I guess I do have three more vices I didn't count. I have a cross slide vice, a simple drill press vice, and a machinest vice.

I'm sitting at my jewelers bench, and just for fun took a count.
At this one bench I have 19 vises within an arms reach.

Jewelers have a special holding tool for almost each purpose. There are ones for holding rings while setting stones. Ones for holding rings while polishing...while engraving...while assembling heads to the ring...etc. Then there are pin vises in many sizes....and watch makers vises to hold different case shapes...and to hold movements...and crystals. There are many different hand vises to hold small parts while setting stones and making parts.....And a couple of small bench vises for general vise jobs.
The GRS benchmate system is basically a bunch of different vise and holding tools that all fit a universal mount on your bench front.

On the subject of tools, we are getting ready to move the store into a new ,and larger, store space. I will have a dedicated workroom and a separate polishing room. The workroom will have many jewelers benches ,and I will bring all my specialized tools there. When the move is done, I'll post photos of the work space.

I've modified several vices for a more focused purpose. Several of my vices I have mounted on a plate with a piece of square tubing welded on perpendicular to the plate. I use a larger piece of tubing to make an x/y mount allowing for the vice to be mounted horizonal or vertical or removed very quickly. On my finishing vices I replace the steel jaws with brass or copper jaws to protect the knife blades.

I converted the jaws on a 4" vice to 8" wide with a special configuration for bending nickle sheet. I've built many specialty fixtures for mounting to and extending the jaws of the vice.

I ended up building a specialty vice for my twisting machine.

A friend has relief carved erotic figures into his very cool vice.

Man can never have enough vices...Take Care...Ed
