How many?

Bear in mind I'm really only interested in knives which will be used myself. Anyway, while contemplating a Lochsa order, on top of the customised Dozier and the Busse, with an eye out for certain BM's coming down the pipe, it has occurred to me to consider whether maybe, just maybe, I might be getting just a tad 'excessive' in all this.

Collection is one thing, but for use? High end I can come at, but more than say about 15 or so total - folding and fixed? Hmmm, as Spark is fond of saying, indeed.

SO:

- Confining yourself to knives OVER US$100 (say to just include the BM 705, although yes you can get one for just under that), how many knives do you guys own exactly?

- Following from that, what percentage of those do you intend to use?

- Finally, what is the breakdown percentage - folder c/w fixed - in each case? Meaning overall and for those you use - two figures.

Lets see...I have thirteen folders worth $100 or more. I use eleven of them, the other two are NIB and up for sale.

I also have eight fixed blades. One is a cheaply made khukuri I got to display, but all the others are users. They range from a HI BAS khukuri to my Rinaldi Enigma to my Criswell katana.

After all this, I still don't think it is excessive! :D

Well that is quite a few. Maybe you being 'in the game' has something to do with it, not sure.

Our resident Mad Hungarian might give a few readers a shock I think, assuming he sees fit to respond.

Counting my collection of older mint knives consisting of Case, Winchester, Remington Bullets(1982 to present), Schatt and Morgan, etc.; and my newer knives including Benchmade, Spyderco, CRKT, SOG, Becker, Kershaw, SAK's, etc. I'd say that I am easily at 100 knives, with about 50 valued over $100.

I intend to use about 15 of them, and none of those are valued over $100.

Overall: 85% folders and 15% fixed

Users: 70% folders and 30% fixed

Interesting SMcG. Could be wrong of course, but it would seem from that:

- you have a not insignificant interest in collection, which is heavily inclined to folders and has a historical element to it, to an extent;

- usage inclination seems of the 'no-nonsense' and/or 'don't mind what happens to it' variety. Probably task orientated also;

- you'd consider anything more than about 15 users to be superfluous.

I have been collecting and using knives since 1971. And I used to have a thing for PUMA's. At present I beleive that I have somewhere around 200 knives. Of those I beleive that about 40+ are worth over $100.00. Many because of antique value. Approximately 90% folders. Of the modern (1990 and on) $100.00 that I use = 0. I almost always use folders, 95% of the time. I still use my first PUMA, a 1971 Hunter's Pal. Anyone else remember Pumaster Steel?

Hmm, I own around 170 knives. And less than 50 of them are under $100.
I've used almost all of them occasionally, and I have in use (rotating) over 20 knives. All of them over 100$.

Yes and very appealing knives they are too Gator. I've gained a lot from your website, on a number of counts. It was also down to you that I succumbed in connection with the Lochsa.

So thanks for that. At least I think so...

"Another historical collector.

Could be instructive - not one above $100 in use."

Yikes, does that make me feel old! I just turned 46 on Saturday (5-10). The love of steel hit me at an early age. I see the same thing in my son. He turns 14 on 5-15. You should see his collection of slip-joints. Some of my knives are high (?) art to me. I have had more than enough users for 25 years or more. None of them are worn out. Puma, Case, Boker, Ka-bar, Camillus, etc.
But I keep on buying and collecting. New designs, new steels, and inserts. Isn't it wonderful? And to think I don't own a Benchmade yet.

two 25" HI sirupatis and a 25+ year old Case Bowie that was my Grandpa's and is still in near mint condition. The rest of my stuff is plain and simple production stuff. Heck, I only paid $1850 for my car.

Most are production folders, average price I guess $50-60US each. I have some customs, fixed and folders. The average custom price is about $200. I sold a lot of the factory folders to fund some knifemaking equipment and now have only about 50 knives left that were not made by me. I kept all the customs.

131 to be exact. Half of them is over $100 and I think I have used about 80 of them occasionally.

I have an Umfaan and two small Sebenzas (and one on the way). They all see use. When the small Lochsa comes to be, it will be added to the rotation.
I also have three "customs" by Melvin Dunn, two fixed and one folder. They no longer see any use but are there if I need them.

Currently over 150 that qualify. Of those less than 20% have not been carried/used in some way. Been using them since the early 80's.

I currently have 45 knives and only one was over 100.00, the Camillus Cuda Maxx. I never in my mind thought that I would pay that much for a blade. Yes, I do carry it but most of the other ones I don't. The collection includes folders, tactical blades, hunting, fixed, survival knives.
I have a strange feeling that in the coming years I will be looking at knives that are over 100.00, much to my wifes dismay....who cares right!

I have only been collecting for just under 1 year now. I have 9 knives (10 with the dominator on pre order) 3 are fixed blade the other 7 or 8 are folders.

All of the fixed blades were over $100, just 5 of the folders were over $100 but I pay over the odds living in the UK

Some I take more care over that others but I use all of them to a certain extent. 1 of the fixed blades and 2 of the folders are in virtually pristene condition but I do use them but only for light tasks.

I dont think I would ever buy a knife and not use it for something even if it were just opening letters and trimming fingernails, I couldnt stand owning a knife and not knowing how it handled...

Well, one (1) production knife worth more than $100 (new), a BM pinnacle. And I use the hell out of it :D

I make knives though, if you count the cost of all my tools into the homemade folder I rotate with the pinnacle for EDC....it cost over $1000 :eek:

I've made quite a few more than that, and use the tools for other things besides so thats not really accurate. Kind of scary to start looking at things that way though :)

I don't have any knives that I don't use. Some only get light use, but all are carried at some point.

Golly. Some diverse responses here, that's for sure.

We can say with certainty:

- DragonM and son are due many happy returns;

- Silver Fox paid $1850 for a VW with a dodgy carb.;

- Jason is a decidedly high energy kind of guy - managing (god knows how) a psychiatry residency AND knife making at the same time. Have my eye on a possible order in the future there - just the latter I think, although you never know of course. Let us know when you have worked with S30V for a bit. You do your own heat treat I take it?

- Carl and TonyCCW are Gatorish inclined. It'd be interesting to see the fixed/folding breakdown;

- PWork is rather particular;

- Parfive can anticipate his wife purchasing an increasing number of expensive shoes in the coming years;

- bladefixation and I have a fair amount in common at this point;

- Matt rolls his own;

- Gold members are generally averse to posting in this thread.

And we might have a miffed Mad Hungarian, also.

I have about 10 knives over 100 if you include the balisongs. I try to fit at least half of those in my EDC rotation but even though they only see light use since i'm a city slicker. I think that having around 3-5 knives is enough for EDC rotation anything above that is probably excessive unless you are a collector
