How much AG/AU should one store?

I think I'll look into an underwater house.... Even in the worst of times there will be those who are programmed to covet gold and silver. Just not a lot. Hasn't gold dropped in price recently?

Have you not heard of that madman who lit a lantern in the bright morning hours, ran to the marketplace and cried incessantly: "I am looking for God! I am looking for God!"

Back on topic: I would look to a fortifiable residence and a stockpile of useful supplies before sinking too much into metals that a lot of people won't trade for.

The concept of a fortified residence or property is great, but you need people to defend it. Those with an abundance of basic goods may simply be preyed upon.

Who usually wins in this world? The rich of course. Somebody is going to become the "bank" and that person will win. It will take a while for things to settle down, but they will settle down and the bank will win. Hence gold, silver and similar commodities are very valuable.

All that said, you still need to eat and in this world you'll need fuel or a way to make it.

Diversity is the key. There is short term (<6 months), middle term (a growing season or two), and long term objectives (years). Most focus on the short term as that is all that is possible for them. I'm one of them.

If you REALLY want to be king of the end of the world get a source of clean water, a bunch of gas, a generator, an ice machine and maybe a stack of styrofoam coolers. Nobody is going to be trading silver and gold except for the prepper nutters who actually know what it's worth and I don't know about you but those aren't the people I want to trade with. They would be too tempted to steal at gun point and I've heard plenty of them say as much. Ice on the other hand will be wanted by EVERYBODY and not just to keep food cold. Diabetics and others need refrigeration to keep their meds cold just to stay alive. I'd rather deal with a diabetic who has some sort of marketable skill other than stockpiling guns and ammo. YMMV

Stock up on .22LR ammo. It will be worth its weight in.......................gold. :D

Leghog, now that is interesting about the 22 shells and bartering for services. I still wander by the sporting goods section at Walmart everytime I visit thinking I might see some 22LR. Nope..... I am just not willing to stand in line or make arrangements to "be there" early in the morning (yet).

The 22 ammunition is a great example of a shortage that has lasted far longer than it should and impacts many. Having a cache becomes more than just having a pile of 22 ammo in the cabinet or closet.
