How Much Are You Paying for Analysis?

Gday folks,

So I had a colleague who could do metallographic analysis for me but he moved to Perth. Now I have found a bloke interstate who can do it for me and he provides a low priority rate for his work.

I dont have a rockwell tester because they are expensive, need calibration and was told you need the sample to be flat for a proper result.

The analysis I'm paying for uses techniques that are able to measure the HRC value right at the edge, and at all other places of the blade. I get other stuff in the report like % of retained austenite and if I have avoided messing up the temper by overheating during finish grinding or buffing.

I figure this is all useful info and probably worth doing into the future as a quality control thing. Ive been thinking about if it would be cheaper sending it overseas so could you please include your country when responding with how much any of you are paying for such analysis.

thanks

Brass Rod - $1.00
2x4 - $5.00
Cardboard Box - Free

Making knives that work = Priceless

I take the point guys that knives can be tested cheaply by other means. I do perform those types of tests. I guess what I found most useful about metallographic analysis was that it explained why some of my earlier blades were not performing as well as they should - simple knife tests wont explain why.

Now that I'm happy with the performance of the blades I'm curious as to if this can be done more cheaply overseas. I guess one way to play it is to do the cheap and easy tests and if problems come up, then pay for more involved analysis to find out why.

Why not perform some of these tests yourself? You can take micrographs to see if the heat treat went well, with a cheap microscope and etchant solution. You can also see the retained austenite.
