How much blade play is acceptable

I know this has been discussed before, but I am noticing about 1 or 2 mm of lateral blade movement on my Strider Sng after about two months of use. Functionally, its not a problem, but if this is the early stages for more loosening/problems I would rather get it fixed sooner than later. By the way, I'm not trying to knock any maker, but I have had a Spyderco Endura for over ten years and there has never been any blade play. Interesting....

try tightening the pivot screw. it shouldnt move nearly that much. 2mm could easily cause lock failure.

and after tightening the pivot screw, put a drop or two of
Militec or FP-10 in there and work the action back and forth a few times

Very small fraction of mm

I'd like to say none but I have yet to see folder with absolutely NONE (check yours when closed - push sideways near the tip and you will see there is a bladeplay)

I made a very slight adjustment to the bull pivot and now it is perfect! It will open one handed using the thumb hole but there is zero blade movement. Even the tip doesnt move when in the closed position.

I believe Josh from Strider would recommend tightening the pivot, as he has in the past.

I have disassembled a few knives in the past, as have others to thoroughly clean them, and it's not hard. Certainly not like rebuilding a carburetor, but there are those who won't and wait weeks for the knife's return.

huugh, I started a thread on this a few weeks back, and you would be amazed at what was posted in reply. I found it interesting the less technical the training, the less play was allowed, right down to "rock solid," which I think you might agree can only exist in fixed blades.

Those you regularly dissassemble their knives for cleaning didn't even remark on it.

On the other hand I read all the times how one's folder has absolutely no bladeplay and is "rock solid" etc. :)

Probably un/acceptable bladeplay is in the eye of beholder?

IMHO you can't demand absolute perfection (in fact, maintaining some tolerances for possible wear and "deformation" can increase usability and lifetime) however (IMHO) one should observe it only if checking for "bladeplay"

For me, and the knives that I buy, NO BLADE PLAY is acceptable!! I would contact the dealer that you got it from, and exchange it.

Great!

Now, if you lube it correctly, it will stay solid like that
for a good long time.

Keep the movement around the pivot as frictionless as possible.

A little dab of Locktite 242 Blue on the pivot screw with help keep it from getting loose on you.

I not sure why I am reluctant to put locktite on the pivot...any reason for caution with Loctite?

i like the blue, and use sparingly. just a drop on the screw threads, and it should hold fine. you will also be able to remove the screw if necessary.

too much and it will gum up the pivot and cement the screw in place.
