How much can AUS8 steel take?

I don't know if this is the same video I saw a year or so ago, but I saw one where she showed an AUS8 SRK that she used extensively for IIRC a year and it held up.

Most longtime Cold Steel owners have used their AUS8 for years so I don't think they would see much of a problem with the Bowies and Warcraft knives switching to AUS8 as long as the new prices reflected the switch.

It's the same one. Lilly is a YT star, who parlayed fame into her own knife design. She did a lot for the SRK's reputation, though. The Dutch Bushcraft Knives review of her APO-1 is funny, also a bit mean spirited.

Which was a foolhardy risk on their part. Even rhino knows that it's unwise to anger German/Austrian women, especially if you share the same continent with them.

I agree. I was pretty disappointed with them in how they mocked her. They are sponsored by Fallkniven and also sell their own knife. I believe this is why they punched below the belt, because they see her as a competitor. It was unclassy and uncalled for.

As for Lily's SRK tests, yeah, she did a great job showing how tough the AUS8 SRK was. Unfortunately, since the AUS8 version was discontinued in 2014, it came a little too late for Cold Steel to capitalize on it. The newer SRK in SK-5 sadly, has not lived up to the same reputation as the AUS8 and Carbon V. In fact, if you take a look at the Dutch Bushcraft Knives review of the SK-5 SRK that was a response video to Lily, notice that they DID NOT do a tip test on it. I thought that was very deceptive of them. The SK-5 SRK has a major problem with the thickness of the tip in that it snaps too easily due to the hollow grind of the blade leading up to the tip.

Yeah, that is why I didn't pull the trigger on the SRK in my search for Old Steel. I'm also not really a survival knife guy, either. I much prefer the combo of hatchet/hawk and 3-4" knife.

d762nato;this pic is for you,enjoy!
Knocking out a bit of kindling for the fire.
A task the SRK doesnt consider a strain.

This is my original SRK made between 2007-2010.
Under $50 new, outstanding value for money!
It has/had the smooth Teflon coating.
(The later "Tuff-Ex" version made around 2014 has more of a Matt texture to the coating.
I have one of the later versions mint in the box.)

Handle is still tight, but if it does let go I will rehandle it myself.
Like nephron,I too remember the good old days when CS would rehandle your knife!

Little pouch on the front is one I made from seatbelt material.
It holds a 3 inch DMT diamond plate for touch-ups while out in the sticks.

I have had the older Carbon V versions, and as good as they are,I found I like the Aus8 better.
Never had a 3v or sk5 model so cant comment on them.

I only have three Cold Steel knives, two of these SRK's and a Trailmaster (Carbon V) I rehandled a few years ago.
I love this little knife, tough and sharp!
Hats off to the young lady in the video as well, great stuff Lily.

Q: How much can AUS8 steel take?

A: A hell of a lot more if you don't baton down onto sedimentary rock.
How about the liquid nitrogen and Uru metal hammer test...if you can get Thor to let you borrow his...

Thanks for the feed back on Aus8. Kept me from having to ask! I got 3 CS Marauders, one has been winter pack duty, and because I forgot the SP-51 it had to extra hard duty. It was frozen temps wood, don't know how bad it can be on steel, but it held up great. Love the saber grind CS Marauder version!

How is that knife as a woods blade? Can it carve? Wieldy, unwieldy? How strong is the tip? etc

Beautiful “battle-worn” look there. Thanks for sharing your experiences. It’s always nice to get real-world feedback from folks who use their tools.

It seems to be a good larger woods blade, the newer saber grind model is more front heavy so its better at lopping off limbs and such, I did medium hack and whack with it (I call it medium some other people seem to call it hard). For steel on wood it seems to do fine. I brought a SAW (one of the most important survival tools) along to cut the more bigger offending woody botanicals, and it split them fine for the fire. It can carve...but the rubber hilt can get in the way. For Wieldinessy, well its a bigger blade with a heavier front end than the hollow grind one, but it depends what you want to use it for, remember its a big blade and for doing little twiddle things it would be some what unwieldy. The tip I don't bash my tips in to things to test them, but the hollow grind one did fall from fridge to tiled covered concrete floor and had a slight bend at the tip. No breakage. I'd class this knife like a BK9, jack of all trades and master of a few. The rubber hilt and its "Guards" can get in the way for smaller jobs, buts its curved blade makes it a bit better cutting it seems. Like the BK9 I find its more of a multi-tool in the woods, and can step up and do heavier things if needed.

For fighting and deterrence I think the hollow ground is better, its literally flashier (better and psyching some one out), better balanced making it faster in the hand. But remember, you got not no real guard, the longer blade may help against shorter knives is my guess on things.

The hollow ground is better at carving due to thinner blade. But then this larger knife with a saber grind, I find it can carve as well, just the hilt gaurd gets in they way and subhilt makes things odd some times. But I can live with the latter, I usually pull out the Recon 1 for dittle whittling and such. (fancy wancy fu fu feather sticks). I like the Aus8A CS Marauder (saber grind one :D ) for its durability and able to a lot of jobs, and in wet environments/snowy/moisturerich not having to have to baby the knife to protect from rust is a really big plus!

And finding out in this thread, that Aus8a is awesome, made me glad I could get two saber grinds while I can. (really it should be Aweful! As having some Awe is not as good as being full of Awe! So it should be AWEFUL! RIGHT?)
